World Refugee Day 2024 (With exciting news✨)
AILEM is officially registered! Announced during our Colours of my country event on the 9th of June. AILEM organised our first refugee conference which was held in Brussels 🇧🇪 The event brought together refugees and the local communitys through showcasing our diverse art, language and cultures. We had more than 180 refugees travelled from different parts of Belgium to convene in the capital.

The afternoon filled with speeches, poetry, art and performance, as well as a lunch meal provided in the event. In line with the theme of home, we raised interesting debate and conversations of how we can work towards a more inclusive home for refugees 💬

The timing of the event was also incredibly special for our organisation. It was the anniversary of AILEM winning the European Charlemagne Youth Prize in 2023 and World Refugee Day in June. After more than three years of the idea of AILEM till now, we are now officially registered as a non-profit in Brussels.

We thank everyone who crossed paths with AILEM, whether that is volunteering their time, taking part in our events or just been following our updates 🤝 We hope we can continue growing and expanding to the next stage and bring about more impact to refugees and asylum seekers worldwide 🌍🚀

AILEM X Hot To Go 🍔🥤

On the 7th of February, AILEM collaborated with Hot To Go, a student-led restaurant at UWC Atlantic, to hold a fundraising event for refugees in Malawi. Through this American Diner themed service, we successfully raised £350 to support the education of children in Malawi through the purchasing of projectors, whiteboards, and books. We are now working on setting up these materials at the centre and will provide updates on our operations in the upcoming weeks.

Thank you to Hot To Go for supporting this fundraiser, and to those who visited for your support. We hope you had an amazing time at Hot To Go!

AILEM x BelRefugees Culture and Talent Show 🎵🕺
We collaborated with the Belgian organisation, BelRefugees, in leading a cultural refugee event at their Hotel Leopold facility in Brussels 🇧🇪 More than 30 residents living in the hotel and staff members joined us and shared their cultures through song and dance, from Afghanistan to Syria.

BelRefugees is a Citizen Platform, building a more inclusive and welcoming environment for migrants 🏨 They provide a platform that mobilises and enables citizens to tackle local migration issues.

Thank you to BelRefugees for giving us the opportunity to lead this event, hopefully leading to more activities in the future!

New Years with Petit Château, Fedasil 🇧🇪
During the new years, AILEM led an activity with the asylum seeker reception organisation, at one of their locations, Petit Château. We had participants from Palestine, Afghanistan, Eritrea and more.

Similar to previous events, we had food, games and a presentation sharing about AILEM. This time with the new years we did the Flemish new years tradition of nieuwjaarsbrief, where the participants wrote letters for their loved ones. Additionally, participants shared about their experiences living in Brussels, the joys and challenges in their new homes.

Thank you to Fedasil for having us present again!
