After 4 amazing years of childminding, the time has come for Bryn Bychan Childcare to close its doors for the final time.

I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported me and helped me navigate the many ups and downs that the last few years have brought to everyone. To the children who made everyday worthwhile, their parents who became great friends and all the practitioners who I turned to and became my team, what you have taught me has been invaluable.

The hardest goodbyes

Goodbye is always hard as a childminder, spending so much time with these amazing little people they ultimately become part of your family, as do their own family.
But somehow saying goodbye to my lockdown babies is sooo much harder, they joined during a really strange time where we weren't allowed to see our own extended families but it was somehow okay to visit a total stranger, this made our relationships stronger, made us cling on to those attachments and make them more secure than ever before....
And now we are saying goodbye and sending them to their next chapter in a world that is as confusing as ever but knowing that we helped to shape the amazing people they will become.

Is it safe for my child to eat in the car? 🍔🚙

NO, it's not safe! ❌

Here are some reasons why:
- Not being able to pay full attention to the road, as an affect of supervising your eating child.
- In many cases, a choking baby is completely silent. Undetected choking is therefore a high risk.
- Crumbs can get stuck in locking mechanisms, and straps can become slippery, making the car seat less safe - particularly in an accident.

If you’re on a long trip, and have no choice but to feed on the go, try to find a safe place to stop, remove your little one from the car seat, and carefully supervise them until they’ve safely finished eating. 🍲

This is why the children I care for always have muddy feet ☺️

“At the age of 10-12 months when a child begins to walk, the bones of the foot are only partially ossified, are in reality but an orderly arrangement of cartilaginous masses.” - Functional Disorders of the Foot by Frank D. Dickinson, MD 🦶🏽

The implications of this are that little feet are extremely malleable, and will adapt to whatever environment they are put in. We want our children to grow up with natural shaped feet, not shoe-shaped feet. Keep those little paws out of shoes as long as possible. 🐾

We love flowers and plants here, they give so much opportunity for exploration, learning and play.
The weather has really turned here and there is a freezing wind hitting us hard, so we've brought the outdoors in and the littlies have been flower arranging. There was no expectation with the activity, just a tray of reduced mother's Day flowers, some goblets and some wicker balls. I was interested to see what the children would do. It was so lovely to watch those little hands threading and balancing, one spent ages poking flowers into the balls while the other worked really hard pulling them out and plucking the petals off.

HOW TO BEST PREPARE PRESCHOOLERS FOR FUTURE READING AND WRITING

There's no need for pencils or paper. Preschoolers don’t need to learn letters at this age either.

“Getting ready to read and write does NOT need to, nor should it, involve sitting still, OR letters, OR paper, and pencil. There are so many other important things that need to happen, and happen a LOT, before a child can successfully read and write.” - Denita Dinger, author and early childhood educator

• Children need a strong sense of body awareness (developed through active free play)
• Eyes need to track
• Core muscles (stomach & back), shoulders, neck, hand, and finger strength should be adequate
• Children need basic coordination of both fine and gross motor skills
• Children need time to make lots of mistakes and learn perseverance

Children gain these foundational skills through FREQUENT outdoor play opportunities!

Let children....

Blow more bubbles.
Swing, spin, and roll down hills.
Hang upside down from the monkey bars.
Climb more trees.
Build more forts.
Make more mistakes.
Struggle more, give up less.

Ample outdoor play opportunities lay a strong foundation by organizing the brain and preparing the body, so that reading and writing can become a meaningful experience.
