What happens when experience from military engineering, frontline ambulance care and HEMS enters the classroom? đź’Ş

Meet Gareth “Gaz” Williams, Senior Lecturer at Outreach Rescue. 👋

Gaz served for 14 years in the Royal Engineers, completing operational tours in the UK and overseas and working in demanding environments where teamwork, adaptability and sound decision-making mattered. He then spent 20 years with the Welsh Ambulance Service, including five years as a Helicopter Emergency Medical Service paramedic.

Today, Gaz draws on that military, clinical and emergency-response experience when helping learners connect technical knowledge with the realities of working under pressure.

He is a HCPC-registered paramedic and holds a BSc in Paramedic Science. He also has a signature pose that tends to appear during almost every practical training session.

Confined Space Rescue Starts Before Entry ⚠️🕳️

Before a team commits, it needs to understand the hazards, assess the atmosphere and determine the controls required.

That principle shaped a recent combined City & Guilds High Risk Confined Space and Rescue and Recovery programme for six officers from Waterford Fire Service and Kildare Fire Service in Ireland.

Outreach Rescue instructor Jim Catton has shared his perspective on the week, including how the participants:

– Compared familiar Fire Service practice with UK Confined Space standards
– Applied risk assessment and atmospheric monitoring
– Turned technical learning into practical rescue decisions
– Prepared for the next stage of instructor development

Meet Sarah Jones, our Office Administrator.

Sarah keeps Outreach Rescue running smoothly, supporting delegates with course bookings and ensuring every learner enjoys a seamless experience from enquiry to course completion. Her background across the Welsh Government, local businesses and the private sector helps keep everything on track behind the scenes.

Outside of work, Sarah is a dedicated Scouting leader and a self-confessed LEGO enthusiast!

Just like building one of her favourite Disney LEGO sets, Sarah makes sure every piece is in place before any training begins. Thank you, Sarah, for all you do.

Planning to watch today’s solar eclipse? Please remember to protect your eyes.

Across the UK, the deep partial eclipse will begin shortly after 6 PM, reaching maximum coverage roughly an hour later between 7:02 PM and 7:16 PM BST.

It is NEVER safe to look directly at the Sun during an eclipse without suitable protection.

• Ordinary sunglasses, including UV-rated styles, are not safe for eclipse viewing.
• Use undamaged eclipse glasses or a handheld viewer meeting ISO 12312-2:2015(E).
• Do not view or photograph the eclipse with an unfiltered smartphone, camera, binoculars or telescope.
• Without suitable eye protection, use an approved indirect method or trusted livestream.

Please share this advice with anyone planning to watch.

Great instructors don't just teach the 'HOW' — they explain the 'WHY'. 🧠

Dave Noddle served for 30 years in the Fire and Rescue Service, including 12 years specialising in Rope Rescue and 7 years with Urban Search and Rescue (USAR).

Today, he uses that incredible experience to help learners at Outreach Rescue understand not only how to apply rescue techniques, but when and why they should be implemented.

How much should firefighters understand about CASUALTY TRAUMA — and how much should remain within the paramedic role? It is a distinction that matters for training, governance and joint working. 🚒

At a road traffic collision, technical rescue and casualty care take place simultaneously.

Firefighters and ambulance clinicians have distinct responsibilities. But a shared understanding of trauma priorities can support casualty-centred rescue, clearer communication and more effective multi-agency operations.

Rachel Smith brings an exceptional range of operational knowledge to Outreach Rescue, from frontline ambulance practice to maritime medicine and international Search & Rescue. As an HCPC-registered paramedic, she is passionate about helping learners develop the confidence and clinical reasoning needed to make effective decisions under pressure.

Away from the classroom, Rachel has also rowed 3,000 miles across the Atlantic and set two world records— an achievement that reflects the resilience and determination she brings to every course.
