Meet JĂĽrgen Dissmann, Technical Rescue Instructor at Outreach Rescue.

With a first-class degree in Civil Engineering and 24 years running his own construction company, JĂĽrgen brings valuable expertise to Paratech Heavy Lifting and Bariatric Rescue training.

His understanding of structural forces and load management, combined with experience in mountain rescue, rope access and water safety, helps him turn complex technical principles into practical, accessible learning.

The more you put into training, the more you take away. Mark Fryatt has spent much of his career helping people prepare for demanding situations.

After ten years in the British Army and more than 30 years in the fire service, specialising in rescue and incident management, Mark now brings that experience to his role as GWO & Utilities Training Manager at Outreach Rescue. What he enjoys most is working with people and helping new and returning candidates towards their qualifications.

His proudest achievement is seeing both his sons take up full-time roles in the emergency services.

Different services. One shared focus: Someone who needs rescued 🛟

A real-world rescue can bring together Fire and Rescue, Ambulance and Search and Rescue personnel. Each brings specialist skills, but they also need to work effectively as one team.

Training at Outreach Rescue alongside other agencies gives teams the opportunity to compare approaches, understand each other’s priorities and practise coordinating rescue and medical care.

Those learning opportunities can extend across borders. In this video, Gaz reflects on an exercise involving West Yorkshire Fire Service and Hong Kong. Working alongside people from different operational environments offers fresh perspectives and a chance to learn from each other’s experience.

Planning boat operator training for your water rescue team? 🌊

We have places available on Outreach Rescue’s Water & Flood Rescue Boat Operator course (DEFRA Mod 4):

• 26–29 October 2026 — 1 place
• 9–12 November 2026 — 2 places

This four-day, predominantly practical course covers powered boat handling for inland water and flood rescue, including dynamic risk assessment, casualty recovery and working with shore-based support.

Training takes place on the Menai Strait. Delegates need an in-date Mod 3 compliant award, an RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate and experience helming powerboats.

A successful training day starts long before the first delegate arrives. 🗂️

Schedules, logistics, enquiries and countless practical details all need to come together—and that is where Amy Jones, Office Manager at Outreach Rescue, plays such an important role.

Amy thrives on handling the unexpected, juggling competing priorities and helping trainers and delegates receive the support they need. Her calm, welcoming approach helps keep everything moving behind the scenes.

Her inspiration is Henry Winkler, whose kindness, humour and generosity demonstrate the lasting impact of how we treat other people.

What does sound judgement look like when the route ahead is unexplored? Ask Sal Montgomery. 🌊

A professional whitewater kayaker and Technical Rescue Instructor at Outreach Rescue, Sal has led expeditions through some of the world’s most remote environments, including world-first river descents with explorer Steve Backshall. She has also worked internationally as a safety specialist for television productions and as part of Bear Grylls’ core safety team.

Sal brings that experience to her courses, helping delegates build on what they know and practise teamwork, technical skills and decision-making under pressure.

And her idea of a memorable day on the water? Kayaking off a waterfall more than 60 feet high.

Technical rescue and clinical training both depend on understanding the demands people face in practice.

Rachel Smith, Clinical Tutor & Paramedic, is at The Emergency Services Show today and will be attending across both days. Greg Cain, Technical Training Manager, will join her tomorrow for Day 2.

Your first evacuation descent might begin with nerves. However, when your feet hit the ground, you could be asking: “Can I have another go, please?” 🙏

Trust in PPE and evacuation equipment is not built through reassurance alone. Supervised practice helps Outreach delegates familiarise themselves with the kit, understand how it behaves and how to use it correctly.

At Raglan, South Wales our 15-metre training tower provides a controlled environment for practising evacuation and rescue skills at realistic height.

From Confined Spaces to Atlantic crossings, Jim Catton knows the value of preparation. 🧭

Before joining Outreach Rescue, Jim spent more than 20 years working across construction and renewable energy. That real-world industry experience now shapes his work as our Industrial Instructor and Facilities Manager, specialising in Confined Space entry and rescue, industrial safety and equipment management.

Jim also has experience in City & Guilds instructor training and a talent for making complex rescue techniques easier to understand through simple, practical analogies.

His proudest moments come from coaching candidates who arrive believing they “can’t pass exams” and helping them achieve successful results.

Away from work, Jim has sailed across the Atlantic to the Canaries and Azores, navigating by the stars. ⛵
