This summer I have had the privilege of teaching students in a new Swedish Speaking Programme in three levels:

🟑 Swedish practice - beginners

🟑 Swedish confidence builder -improvers

🟑 Swedish fluency - advanced

I had the opportunity to meet up with one of my American students who visited Sevilla, Spain.

Must say that teaching online can seem like a lonely job, but it is fantastic to meet up for a chat on our trips around the world 🌍

Autumn is coming closer everyday and lessons start 7/9.

One simple question led to a meaningful language discussion with one of my younger students who is learning English (mother Swedish, father Spanish - hence multilingual awareness)

A discussion that revealed phonological awareness and language knowledge at its best.

Yesterday, while reading a story together, my student asked:

-Maria, how do you say "there is" in Swedish?

That one question opened a conversation between Spanish, Swedish and English.

What fascinated me was not just the words, it was the thinking behind them.

An eight-year old was naturally comparing sounds, meaning and connection between languages.

Children are incredible language learners.

Whether they xare bilingual, multilingual or learning a new language at school, they are constantly noticing patterns and building bridges between languages.

Sometimes the smallest conversations reveal the biggest insights.

πŸ’ Has your child ever surprised you with a connection between languages?

Learning a language isn't about using bigger or more advanced words.

Learning a language is about choosing the right words so the message comes alive in a natural way.

Take a look at today's example πŸ‘†

The more refined version doesn't just add vocabulary, it chooses the right words to create an image, set the scene, and make the language feel more vivid and authentic.

There is also another important lesson here:

🌏 GOOD TRANSLATION IS NOT ABOUT
TRANSLATING WORD FOR WORD!

When you translate from one language to another, you need to adapt the language so it sounds natural in the target language. The goal is to preserve the meaning, tone, and intention.

Sometimes the words change, and that is exactly what makes a translation successful. It allows the message to come alive in a way that is natural to the reader.

This is what C1-level communication is all about, making thoughtful language choices that suit the context.

πŸ’¬ Which version do you prefer, the Simple, or the Advanced sentence? Why?

I'd love to see your answer, and hear why you prefer one version ovet the other. πŸ‘‡

Lenny Kravitz made me reflect on language appreciation and connection.🎸

I recently watched a global rock icon command the stage at a concert in Spain. But it wasn't his guitar solos or his timeless energy that stuck with me most.

It was when he stopped the music abd addressed the audience entirely in Spanish.

As an international superstar, everyone in that crowd would have happily understood him in English.

But the crowd went absolutely wild when he connected with them in Spanish.

That is true connection and true communication. It is about showing respect and being willing to step out of your comfort zone to meet people exactly where they are.

I see people hold themselves back because of language perfectionism every single day. So many brilliant, capable professionals completely freeze up in meetings, hesitate to share great ideas, or avoid taking the lead on new projects because they are simply terrified of making a mistake (grammar, word or pronunciation).

The question is whether we ever actually dare to say anything when we demand perfection from ourselves.

Nope, I do not think so.

I believe true fluency is about prioritising human connection over flawless ex*****on. Moving from an intermediate level to a commanding C1 prescence isn't about memorising more vocabulary rules. It is about building the ultimate confidence to practice in real life.

If a global superstar can step out of his comfort zone on a stage, look at a crowd, and openly say "Well, I'm trying" just to prioritise mutual respect, we can certainly risk raising our hands in the next meeting.

Stop waiting for certainty. It might not arrive; start practicing in real life.

The Best Conversations Come From Real-Life Experiences ✨

Students speak more confidently when the topic connects to their own experiences and interests. Real-life conversations help learners express their thoughts naturally, improve fluency, and build confidence while speaking. πŸ’¬

When people can personally relate to a topic, conversations become more engaging, authentic, and meaningful making communication feel effortless and enjoyable. 🌟

From a Distant Goal to an Official University Application. πŸ“βœ¨

When I launched the Marilingo Mentoring Program for utlandssvenska teens, I wanted to create a roadmap that didn't just teach Swedish, but actually unlocked future academic opportunities in Sweden.

Today, my very first mentee reached the ultimate milestone by applying for his first university course.

This student has been following the official curriculum for Swedish as a second language at Sofia Distans commissioned by the National Board of Education (Skolverket) to teach Swedish students abroad. This municipal school operates on the exact same curriculum and grading criteria as schools located in Sweden.

After three years at Sofia Distans it was time to continue at gymnasiet (sixth form/college in the UK), also distance learning but now at Hermods Distansgymnasium.

We spent months working on language fluency, building independent study habits, and navigating the complexities of these rigorous distance learning program. Seeing students take this massive step toward their future is proof that with the right guidance and grit, global students can seamlessly transition to the Swedish education system.

The journey doesn't stop here, but today we celebrate this huge win! πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰
