Risky play is an important part of early childhood development, giving children opportunities to explore their limits, build confidence and develop independence in a safe and supported environment. Activities such as climbing, balancing, running, using tools, exploring uneven ground or playing with natural materials allow children to experience manageable challenges, make decisions and learn to assess risk for themselves. Rather than removing all risks, practitioners can provide appropriate boundaries and guidance, allowing children to develop problem-solving skills, resilience, coordination and self-confidence. Risky play also encourages curiosity, creativity and perseverance, helping children understand that mistakes and small setbacks are a natural part of learning. When children are given the freedom to take appropriate risks, they become more capable, confident and independent learners while developing an understanding of how to keep themselves and others safe.
