It’s that time of year again - we will be able to find lots of bugs in our gardens. What will
you find under a log, in the tree, under a pot?

Let’s see what lives in our gardens. You can take part in a bug survey and submit your results or send pictures to us. We’d love to see what you’ve found!
Remember to keep the bugs safe and put them back in their habitat when you’ve finished looking.

What the Robin Told

The wind
told the grasses,
And the grasses
told the trees.
The trees
told the bushes,
And the bushes
told the bees.
The bees
told the robin,
And the robin
sang out clear:
Wake up!
Wake up!
Spring is here!

It's nesting season and our garden birds are working hard. Did you know that all wild birds, their nests and eggs are protected by law? It’s important not to disturb them, so please leave the hedge-trimming until later in the year.

Today is brought to you by the letter A, Why? Well, on this day in 1884 the first portion of the Oxford English Dictionary was published (the letter A!).

One of our favourite words beginning with A is Attenborough. And important announcement, on Tuesday and Thursday this week the one and only David Attenborough is teaching as part of BBC Bitesize! Put it in your diaries, underline and circle!

As one of the nation’s treasures, we thought we’d share this quote of his on education. Encouraging children to find out for themselves ignites self-confidence, independence and self-discovery, just like using a dictionary to find out the answer (see how we looped back around there?).

If you're as much of a fan of David Attenborough as us, you might enjoy our range of teaching resources all about his work, science and nature. Take a look here 👉 https://www.twinkl.co.uk/l/98u83

Who took part in the Big Garden Bird Watch? It was a great way to help the RSPB but also good for our well-being. We were totally absorbed for the hour- just what we needed during this challenging time.
Now we have our results and can use this for plenty of discussion. We can even think about ways to encourage more birds to the garden.
We will consider adding a wider range of bird food and add more food for the ground feeders. Perhaps add mealworms.

Can you find & identify all of these animal tracks? 🔎🐾

While you are out for your winter walks, you may encounter animal tracks... They can be found anywhere – in city parks, in your garden or in the rural countryside. It is easiest to spot them in muddy places, or when it has snowed.

For day 4 of #12dayswild why not become a footprint detective! - Use our spotter sheet to help you identify the animal tracks!

The snow gives us a great chance to look for signs of animals- their tracks are easier to spot. What will you find?

For those of you who missed our Stay-at-Home Challenge poster here it is again. With the kids at home it might give them something to do either from the house or while on their exercise walk. If you did it already why not try it again. We have added tick boxes so you can tick off the different species as you see them. A high resolution version of it and more fun activity ideas can be downloaded from on our Publications page https://birdwatchcork.com/publications/ It is great fun for all the family! This looks great!

Tomorrow (Wednesday) at 10am I’ll be doing a survival hacks lesson showing various hacks to help you survive in the wild! 😎🍁 https://bushcraft.academy/live-sessions

If you want to take part in part or all of the lesson and do the hack live then you’ll need the following:

Compass:
Sewing 🪡 needle
Leaf 🍁
Bucket of water
Magnet 🧲 (I’m using a strong fridge magnet!)

Water filter:
Old clear plastic bottle (any size but 1 litre ideal)
Charcoal (not much!)
Sand (from a sand pit maybe?)
Pebbles (from the neighbour’s drive?)
Rubber band
Bit of old cloth / rag.
Jug of muddy water (mix a bit of soil into tap water)
Clean glass or cup.

I’ll also be revealing some of my expedition hacks that make life easier when outdoors camping.

10 Nature Activities to Help Get Your Family Through the Coronavirus Pandemic - Children and Nature Network

Some lovely ideas to keep us connected with nature through this lockdown. I particularly like the idea of creating a space indoors to watch the world and nature- the “World Watching Space”.
Try some bird watching, look at the stars at night and see what visits your outdoor space.

10 Nature Activities to Help Get Your Family Through the Coronavirus Pandemic - Children and Nature Network If the coronavirus spreads at the rate that experts believe it will, schools, workplaces and businesses will continue to close. Here’s a thread of silver lining. We’ll have more time for each other and nature. And, at least so far, nature’s always open.
