St David's College

St David's College St David's College, Llandudno North Wales, is a co-educational boarding and day school for ages 9 to 19.

The school’s aim is simple, to bring out the best in every pupil, whatever their abilities, strengths, or weaknesses. St David’s believes true education is about getting to the core of every individual and takes a ‘whole person’ approach to teaching. The successful academic education received at St David’s goes further than simply transferring knowledge. St David’s College’s commitment to the safe

ty, health and well-being of its students has been highlighted in the school’s most recent series of inspection reports. As part of the excellent pastoral care at St David’s, the school has introduced such innovations as peer mediation and lessons in global citizenship. Many pupils very quickly feel part of the St David’s family with its unique, supportive and caring atmosphere. The school’s academic success, with a 98% A-level pass rate and a majority of students successfully gaining entrance to university, is supported by an industry-leading outdoor education program and a growing list of extra-curricular activities and clubs. Education at St David’s is not just confined to the classroom. In addition to the traditional sports on offer, more than 20 excursions leave site each week including activities such as climbing, sailing, skiing, kayaking, and kite buggying to name a few. Each year a number of expeditions are arranged further afield such as Kayaking in Canada, surfing in Morocco, and even a husky expedition in Sweden. Within the campus, there are a number of popular clubs and activities including canoing, climbing, fishing, dance, and drama. These all serve to build confidence, self-esteem, and leadership skills in our students, which leads to increased enthusiasm for school life. In addition to a wide range of academic qualifications and leadership skills, students leave St David’s with the foundations to reach their full potential. Every student has the freedom to flourish and the opportunity to excel.

Thirty-five years at St David’s College has taught our Headmaster, Andrew Russell, a thing or two.

Perhaps the most important is that education shouldn’t be about trying to be ‘the best’.

It should be about helping young people become good people.

Kind. Grounded. Confident in who they are. Able to show empathy when others disagree, stay calm when things are difficult and make a positive difference to the people around them.

These things are harder to measure than exam results or league tables, but they matter enormously.

In his latest reflection, Andrew looks back on 35 years at St David’s and considers what really lasts long after pupils have left the classroom.

“Not just successful in what they do. Grounded in who they are, and the difference they make to the people around them.”

We are thrilled to announce that we've made the shortlist in the and category.

Specialist provision isn't an add-on for us, it's woven into everyday classroom practice. As our Head of ALNCo, Dr Faye Favill, puts it:

"Specialist provision should never be confused with lower expectations. On the contrary, it should mean higher expertise, greater understanding and a more precise approach to teaching and learning."

With small class sizes of 12 - 15 students, 20 Level 7 specialist teachers and nine Level 5 specialists, our pupils don't just catch up, they thrive. It's an approach we're proud to see recognised, and one we'll keep championing: assume potential, and you change futures.

Congratulations to our whole specialist team on this shortlisting. 🏆

Our Male Mentoring Programme (MMP) started 18 months ago as one small group asking what it means to be a young man today. It's now a whole-school culture where challenge feels like care, vulnerability isn't a weakness, and older students mentor the next generation coming through.

Not fixing boys. Not managing behaviour. Just giving them the chance to belong and to build that for each other.
