🇬🇧 In July 1914, more than 200 Royal Navy vessels, including 59 battleships, assembled at Spithead in one of the greatest displays of British sea power ever witnessed.

Within weeks, Europe would be plunged into the First World War, transforming this magnificent peacetime gathering into a force prepared to defend Britain, protect its vital sea routes and answer the call of duty.

The vast fleet stood as a powerful symbol of British courage, discipline and maritime strength, and of the sailors who served their country through the difficult years ahead.

Remembering Petty Officer Frank Johnson of Church Walks who died today 1917.
Frank was born in Llandudno in 1889, the son of Alfred and Emma Johnson. After attending St George’s National School, Frank was employed as a porter before joining the Royal Navy, aged 16. After a period of training, Frank served on many famous ships including HMS’ Implacable, Ajax, Collingwood and the Empress of India before being transferred into the Royal Navy’s submarine fleet. On 20 August 1917, Frank was aboard submarine E-47 which was engaged in North Sea patrols off the German and Dutch coasts. On that day, four E-class submarines had been sent to intercept German shipping between Heligoland Bight and Rotterdam. E-47 was never heard from again with all hands lost including Frank Johnson aged 29. Frank Johnson has no grave and is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial.

Remembering Chief Officer William Jones who died today 1945 - five days after the war ended - and the last Llandudno lad commemorated on the town’s war memorial who died in the Second World War.
Jones was a pre-war Merchant Navy seaman whose family home was at Trevor Street, Llandudno. In July 1944 he was aboard Ascanius, a British troopship torpedoed by a German U-boat in the Channel while en-route to Normandy. Jones was one of the survivors and was transferred to the SS Samarkand. In August 1945 the Samarkand berthed at Geelong, Australia to unload cargo and as part of his duties, Jones went into the hold to clean the ballast tank. He was overcome by carbon monoxide fumes and despite the best efforts of his crewmates, he could not be saved. Bill Jones was married with two children and is buried at Fawkner Memorial Park Cemetery, Melbourne. Jones’ grave was one of the first of the Llandudno lads buried abroad that I visited some 30 years ago.

Congratulations to MNWB ambassador Gordon Foot for successfully completing his Nordic challenge, trekking through the Arctic Circle to raise awareness of seafarer homelessness and Queen Victoria Seafarers Rest (QVSR)! 🎉

After much preparation, Gordon spent eight days hiking between mountain huts across Lapland.

His challenge shines a light on the homelessness faced by seafarers, veterans and others in need, while raising vital funds for QVSR, which provides accommodation and support for up to 175 people.

We would also like to congratulate Gordon on raising over £9,000 for QVSR!
