How I Eradicated My Childhood Migraines (Not Medical Advice!)
Welcome back to Not A Doctor Dave! Today I am sharing the personal steps I took to finally eradicate the migraines I have suffered from since childhood.
Disclaimer: This is not medical advice. Always consult your doctor, get your blood tests, and follow professional guidance. This is simply what has worked for me.
Here is a breakdown of my approach:
• Alcohol & Caffeine: I significantly reduced my alcohol intake. I also quit caffeine for three years, though I missed it too much and now stick to 1-2 coffees a day. Remember that caffeine, sugar, and alcohol can deplete vital minerals and vitamins, so replenishing them is key.
• Hydration & Electrolytes: I make sure to stay hydrated, but not just with plain water. I take in electrolytes to ensure I have enough magnesium, potassium, and sodium chloride. We are often told to avoid salt, but it is actually essential for maintaining healthy fluid balance, transmitting nerve signals, and supporting proper muscle function.
• B Vitamins: Taking a daily multivitamin along with a Vitamin B complex has made a massive difference for me.
• Boosting GABA: The icing on the cake has been increasing my GABA levels by taking L-theanine and C*D almost every day. GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric acid) is an inhibitory neurotransmitter that helps calm the nervous system.
• Managing Glutamate: On the flip side, glutamate is an excitatory neurotransmitter. Consuming too many carbohydrates can increase glutamate levels in the brain. This is why a ketogenic diet can sometimes help with migraines (and there is research showing it helps with epilepsy, too).
There are loads of things we haven’t covered here—like calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), estrogen, and the MTHFR genetic mutation, which can make you more vulnerable to migraines. I will dive into these in future videos!
