There's a reason our Intro to Sewing class is where so many of our learners begin their journey with us. It's the first step into a skill that opens up more than you'd expect, from small home fixes to full creative projects down the line.

This class is built for complete beginners, no experience needed at all. You'll learn to thread a machine properly, wind and insert a bobbin, change a needle safely, and get comfortable with different stitches. You'll also pick up how to troubleshoot the little things that trip beginners up, tangled thread, skipped stitches, and work with a few different fabric types along the way.

Everything is provided, the machines, the materials, and a tutor by your side the whole time. Small class sizes mean plenty of personal support, and there's always tea, coffee and cake on hand too.

£55 for complete beginners aged 12 and up. Find upcoming dates at charmingosews.com.

What a weekend✨️

This bank holiday, the studio was full from morning to evening as people gave up their own time to sew for children they will probably never meet. Some had sewn for years, some had never touched an overlocker or sewing machine before, and everyone left having made something wonderful.

Together we made 24 dresses and 8 pairs of shorts for Dress a Girl Around the World, and collected £22 towards the cost of posting them. I will be matching that and sending it all off with the parcel on Tuesday.
I will share photos here as soon as we hear the dresses have reached their destination.

To everyone who came, sewed, cut, chatted, laughed and made this weekend what it was, thank you. This is exactly why we do what we do.

This weekend, we're doing something a little different.

On Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th August, Charmingo Sews Academy is opening its doors from 12pm to 7pm both days for a Dress a Girl Around the World sewing weekend. Together, we're making simple dresses and shorts for children living in poverty overseas.

This one's open to anyone who'd like to come, whether you've been to one of our classes before or you've never set foot in the studio. You don't need to be a Charmingo regular to be part of this, you just need a bit of basic sewing know how and a willingness to help.

No zips, no buttons, just simple seams, elastic and shirring. We'll be running demonstrations throughout the day, including on the overlocker, so if you've never used one before, this is your chance to learn.

Bring your own machine or use one of ours. All the fabric you need will be supplied, and if you have spare fabric at home you'd like to bring along and use, or donate for someone else to use, that's very welcome too.

Stay for as long as suits you, whether that's the full seven hours or just an hour.

Can't sew but still want to help? We need hands for cutting fabric too, so please get in touch regardless.

There'll be a donation box on the day. If you're able to give between £2 and £5, that goes directly towards posting the finished dresses to the children they're going to.

It's a lovely way to give back, learn something new, and meet some like minded people along the way. Come and be part of it.

Something new is landing at Charmingo ✂️
You've asked. Repeatedly.

Charmingo Sews Young Atelier is a 14-week evening programme for young people
aged 9–12 and 13–16. Real projects. Real skills. Real confidence.

Learners will design, cut and construct bags, accessories, homeware, soft toys, pyjamas, tops, dresses and more, all inside our professional waterfront studio.
Materials and refreshments are included every week.
No experience needed.

Two separate sessions run each Friday so every learner works at the right pace:
9–12 years · 5:45 – 7:15 pm
and
13–16 years · 7:15 – 8:45 pm

Term begins Friday 11 September and runs until 18 December (no session on 30 October).

Spaces are very limited. Secure a place for the full term or book single sessions

I need YOUR design
I'll make it and I'll wear it on the night. 💚

We've finalist for the Merseyside Independent Business Awards, Best Startup category, and I'm making my own dress for it.

Here's my confession:
I can sew anything you put in front of me. I just need a sketch or photo. I'll draft the pattern and construct it beautifully. But design? My imagination just doesn't stretch that far. Never has.

So I'm handing it over to you.
The brief:
✨️ Full length
✨️ Emerald green satin, lovely and thick for winter (you can see it in the video)
✨️ Top layer is a light emerald mesh, shot through with sequins and beads in different shades of green
✨️ Only rule: I need to be able to wear a bra with it 😅
✨️ Beyond that, genuinely anything. Go wild.

Measurements are in the comments.
For reference, I'm 5'8" (173cm).

Sketch it on paper, draw it on your phone, however you like. I'll be reading every single one.

And please share this. Tag the person you know who's always designing something. Send it to the friend with a sketchbook full of dresses that have never left the page. If you've got a stack of designs sitting in a drawer, this is your chance to see one actually made, worn, and walking into an awards ceremony.
Deadline: 2nd September 2026

Someone out there is about to design a dress that gets photographed on the night. It could be you 💚

There's a reason our Beginners Sewing Course is our most popular course at Charmingo Sews Academy. It's fun, it's creative, and it has a way of pulling people in who never realised they wanted to sew.

An astonishing 196 learners have taken this five week course since we opened 18 months ago, and most of them walked in with no experience at all.

By the end, you'll have the skills to alter your own clothes, make things just for the joy of making them, and build a real foundation that could take you all the way to sewing your own curtains and home projects further down the line. It's a small course with a genuinely big stepping stone attached to it.

Spaces are limited and this one tends to fill quickly. Find upcoming dates at charmingosews.com.

Stop winging it and master your machine markings instead! 🪡✨️

Here are 3 golden rules for clean, straight stitches:

Use your needle plate guides: Align your fabric edge with the measurements (mm/cm in front, inches in the back).

Start 2 stitches inward: This prevents your fabric from bunching or dropping off during your backstitch.

Control your speed: Slower sewing = straighter lines and better machine control every single time.

I honestly hadn't realised Liberty Fabrics did their own sewing patterns until I spotted these in store. The children's prints alone were gorgeous, I can imagine paired with some Liberty fabric they would come out fabulous. I hadn't even noticed until uploading this video that the patterns were half price. I have now gone back online and ordered the Boiler Suit to test for myself. I will post the verdict and a photo of the finished garment when it's made.
