“This is a deeply misguided decision that risks causing significant harm to UK universities. International students are not only essential to the financial stability of our institutions, but they also play a vital role in sustaining local economies in cities like Manchester and Liverpool. Introducing this levy would make the UK less competitive globally and could undermine the very communities that depend on the presence and contributions of these students.”

BRAC University is in my opinion the only Private University in Bangladesh that is making every effort to play a more global role. Last year they appointed a non Bangladeshi as it's Vice Chancellor - Professor Chang. He has a two PhD's from the University of California and MIT. He is also a Yale and Harvard graduate !! This is the type of world class talent that any aspiring private company in the country that needs to making if it seeking more of a global presence. Unfortunately although NSU is very well branded in Bangladesh only, if you ask anyone outside Bengal they have never heard of it !! Even Professor Chang acknowledges that in the global landscape of higher education, BRAC Uni are still off the radar and well behind the world's best in academic practices and standards. I like his style and wish him and BU the best.

The Government should seriously look into this idea of a Singapore-style tuition grant scheme for international students in the UK. Under the scheme universities are allowed to bid for a fixed pool of government grants, each worth up to the maximum home undergraduate tuition loan, which would be used to offer subsidised places to international students in exchange for a work requirement after graduation. This could give the UK Universities a much needed boost !!
