Our littles have been exploring clay today. The children were allowed open and free exploration of the clay.
Research suggests clay has so many benefits not only does it offer a tactile experience of size and weight, it allows children to manipulate the mouldable medium (squishing squashing pattern etc.)
A piece of clay supports the development of children’s small and large muscles therefor improving dexterity. It fosters hand and eye coordination, supports pattern making and building an understanding of 3-dimensional shapes. It promotes vocabulary as children discuss their creations and the actions they took to create their structures.
(S age 3) “I can feel the squishy clay it’s slippy, look I’ve made a palm tree, look its spikey!”
