Today, our thoughts are with everyone who has lost a loved one 🩷

The fact that nitazenes were implicated in one in five drug-related deaths is a stark indication of the changing risks and underlines the need to act quickly to expand the support and services that can help people reduce harm.

But it is too simplistic to say that 1,133 people died because of a contaminated drug supply alone.

Drug-related deaths do not happen in isolation. They are shaped by a complex combination of factors, including poverty, trauma, deprivation, housing insecurity and health inequalities.

Read why we believe that to truly address this public health emergency, Scotland must stop treating drug-related deaths as inevitable and look at the wider circumstances that leave people at greater risk of harm. https://buff.ly/pThWow8

There were a lot of news stories about medetomidine over the weekend.

As Scotland’s national resource of expertise on substance use, we bring together insight, evidence and experience to help people understand and respond to changing patterns of drug use.

Our free medetomidine resource explains what we know about the substance and its potential risks, and provides advice on how to recognise and respond to an overdose.

To stop the deaths, Scotland must follow the evidence.

Today is International Overdose Awareness Day, we take time to remember those we've lost over the years and rededicate ourselves to continuing to help prevent further deaths where we can.

💊 Opioid-related deaths remain a major public health concern in Europe. Preventing them requires action before an overdose occurs, during an overdose and when rapidly changing drug markets create new risks.

Join our webinar marking International Overdose Awareness Day on 31 August to hear experts discuss practical and evidence-based approaches to preventing opioid-related deaths, including continuity of care, take-home naloxone and rapid overdose alerts.

We will explore:
🔵 Continuity of care after prison release and treatment interruptions
🟢 Take-home naloxone programmes and overdose response
🟡 Rapid overdose alerts and information-sharing when drug markets change
🟣 Emerging risks linked to high-potency synthetic opioids and polysubstance use
