Humanise Education: A day in the life of Tom 26/11/2024

How often do we take a step back and think about the students behind the grades? 🤔 For decision-makers in education, it’s easy to get caught up in metrics, targets, and outcomes—but what about the individuals who are actually experiencing it all?

In this case study, we’re sharing Tom’s story from our Humanise Education series. It’s a reminder that every student has their own unique journey, filled with challenges and triumphs that go beyond what’s written on paper. Let’s not forget the importance of understanding their personal stories - because those stories shape how they engage with their learning.

So, here’s a little reminder: In all the decisions we make, let’s make sure we see the person, not just the grade. 💭

📚 Saw this quote from Edutopia - George Lucas Educational Foundation: “If we expect students to be kind, we need to be kind adults. If we expect students to be cooperative, we need to be cooperative adults. If we expect students to be responsible, we need to be responsible adults. Model. Model. Model.” 💡

It’s a simple yet powerful reminder for 🌍: if we want our to reflect certain values, we must first embody them ourselves. At , this philosophy guides everything we do. For our educators, modeling is more than just a method; it’s about becoming active learners of our own teaching 🌱. It’s about staying self-aware and reflective so we can truly lead by example.✨

Sharing this as it really resonated—hopefully, it’s a helpful insight for others in the education space. https://lnkd.in/eVTQGA4n

The concept of an “average learner” has always felt outdated, yet we still see many educational models geared toward an imaginary “typical” student.

David Rose and Anne Meyer, the creators of Universal Design for Learning, articulate that diversity in learning styles, strengths, and even challenges is what strengthens us. Forbes recently spotlighted this in a fascinating article, emphasising that effective social-emotional learning (SEL) should not just tolerate differences but embrace them. It’s about moving beyond simply teaching a curriculum to designing experiences that adapt to each student’s social, emotional, and cognitive needs.

One takeaway I found particularly valuable was how inclusive SEL design doesn’t just serve students with neurodivergence; it sets up every learner for success by fostering confidence and autonomy. For instance, Forbes highlights strength-based teaching methods and thoughtfully integrated digital tools that can provide personalised support, all while creating inclusive spaces where every learner feels secure to grow at their own pace. For anyone implementing or considering SEL in classrooms, this feels like an important step forward.

A question to educators: how do you currently tailor SEL to meet diverse needs in your classrooms?
