BORN BY THE RIVER
**Cast Announcement**
🎭We couldn't be more thrilled to announce that the extraordinarily talented Maria Paul is joining the cast of ‘Born by the River’, an original musical written by Brian Dawe & Jane Elizabeth Dawe being performed as part of the Lock & Quay Pirate Festival, Bootle on Saturday 24th May 2025.
Maria will be performing the pivotal role of Ta'Bu - a teller of tales who narrates the story in which she herself is entwined...
Maria has extensive experience in the Northwest as both an actor and director. Additionally, she teaches drama at higher education level. Maria began her artistic training at Hope Street Ltd in Liverpool, where she earned a BA (Hons) in Creative & Performing Arts and a PGCE in further education. She has served as Youth Arts Director at The Citadel, St. Helens and as Youth & Community Arts Manager at The Black-E, establishing a youth circus and an after-school project for children with ASD. Alongside this work, Maria independently supported women affected by domestic abuse who had no recourse to public funds, ultimately producing theatre performances with Southeast Asian women.
In 2019, she founded Nwoko Arts, where she serves as the Creative Director. With a strong passion for working with underrepresented groups in society, Maria dedicates much of her work to promoting positive activism, enabling individuals to share their stories authentically. Her projects often centre around audio recordings that serve as stimuli for performances and verbatim theatre.
Recently, she has collaborated with the Liverpool Learning Partnership as Project Lead on the Brand-New World programme and has worked as Project Manager for Curious Minds, delivering identity projects in libraries. She has also conducted workshops in colleges and universities on identity and culture, including sessions on verbatim theatre at Edge Hill University and Liverpool John Moore’s University.
Credits include:
E.E Game Store - Commercial; The First Listener - Short Film; Black and White - Short Film; The Tower - ITV Drama; Songs for Europe - Immersive Theatre; That Theatre Group; Spring into Summer; Nwoko Arts; Unspent - Theatre - Reformed CIC; and Leah in Brexitland - One Hour Theatre Company. For Nwoko, she wrote and directed Sweet Mother (Royal Court Theatre Studio, Liverpool Theatre Festival, 2020), The Triangle (Granby Winter Gardens, 2021; Princes Boulevard, 2022) and performed as an actor in Spring into Summer (tour of 30 care homes, 2022).
