How can we determine if our good deeds are motivated by genuine love rather than pride or self-righteousness?
Dear inquirer, please don’t worry about that; it’s a double dose of entrapment. Just do good. Defy your pride at every level. You want to do good? Then do it, for whatever crooked reason you may have. Guilt arises whatever level you look at as you think in this way. Would you choose not to do good because you are now afraid of vanity? Be vain and do good because that second level of guilt make you subject to a third level of guilt and on to moral paralysis. Some examples of this moral psychology come to mind. One relates a story of the person who internally resists good but reluctantly does what is required while another person says loudly, “I will do it” but neglects to do it. The Apostle Paul even said that he was unconcerned at the motives of egotistical preachers so long as the Gospel is preached. In the Old Jewish text a donkey did some good things and I doubt it was concerned about its ego. There are ten thousand ways such concerns about guilt stop us from simply doing what needs to be done now. Sure you may find some contamination in your motives… so what!? Just do good… directly and live with your piddling corruptions… defy them by “just doing it” and you will find that you really don’t need to be right or justified at any level. And if God is not happy with that, let me know.

I enjoy reading about the spiritual walks of others, but, while I am encouraged by them, I am careful not to envy them or to copy their walk. I ask, “How am I to walk, in my skin, my day, my circumstances and according to my condition?”

Where and how it all went wrong.
The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.
For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.
Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

When love is offered “so that…” perceived goodness can be solicited, we have implicit legalism, not the grace of God. Nobody can perceive or be sustained in the consciousness of divine love when the intent or purpose of the love is something other than to be loved. Who can deal honestly with the shadows within himself when his conversion is channeled backward into religious synergism. Christ buried that paradigm once and for all. Be loved as you examine your dislike of yourself- for God’s sake!

Four of her children died. What are the odds? I suppose guilt seemed to be a reasonable presumption. Add that presumption and decades locked away to her loss of her children - one by one! Unbearable! How many of us live under presumptions of guilt; we start to believe them ourselves when, in fact, we loved a are always loved. How did she survive?
