A fantastic addition to our school to support our children/young people in developing their independence and life skills.

A bright yellow bus stop has been installed in the grounds of a Liverpool school to help blind and visually impaired young people to gain the confidence to travel independently. Read more here: https://bbc.in/4fKXIkg

A special event today at the Royal School For The Blind marked the installation of a bus stop in the grounds of the school as a practical learning aid to help pupils become familiar with travelling by bus.

As part of a social value commitment, the Combined Authority’s bus stop contractor Bauer Media has donated the familiar yellow stops at the Royal School for the Blind in Wavertree, and Brushwood Care Home in Speke. HA Civils also provided the groundworks free of charge.

At Brushwood Care Home, the bus stop has been installed to support residents living with dementia, with research showing familiar settings like bus stops can provide a place to pause, talk, and give a sense of comfort.

Speaking at the event, Councillor Steve Foulkes, Chair of the Liverpool City Region Transport Committee and Deputy Cabinet Member for Transport, said:

"These bus stops will make a real difference for young people at the Royal School for the Blind by helping them build the confidence and independence needed to access opportunities across the City Region. They will also provide a familiar and comforting space for care home residents living with dementia. It is a great example of how public procurement can deliver meaningful social value across the City Region."

Every child deserves the opportunity to move, play, build confidence and have fun in an environment where they feel understood, supported and celebrated.
Whether your child has autism, ADHD, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, dyspraxia/DCD, a learning disability, developmental delay, sensory processing differences, or simply benefits from a smaller, more supportive class, they are welcome here.

☀️ Children and young people can access free swimming at Volair centres during the summer holidays.

🏊 Under 16s can access free swimming during public swimming times from now up to Monday 31 August 2026 at Huyton, Kirkby and Stockbridge and up to Monday 10 August at Halewood.

👩‍👧‍👦 Children under the age of 8 must be accompanied by a responsible adult on a ratio of 1 adult to no more than 2 children.

👍 SEN sessions will also be taking place at Stockbridge and Kirkby during the summer and will be free to under 16s.
