🏅A Precious Piece of History Shared with Our School Community
This week, we were honoured to welcome a remarkable piece of family and Church history into school, kindly shared by our wonderful Cook, Michelle Parry.
Michelle brought in a war medal belonging to her great-great uncle, Joseph Brophy, whose life of service reflects extraordinary faith, courage and devotion. Joseph joined the Swiss Guard at just 19 years old and remained in service until 1946. During this time, he was awarded a medal in recognition of his service to the Pope.
Most notably, Joseph served during the Second World War, when he helped guard Pope Pius XII, ensuring the Pope’s safety during a period of immense global uncertainty and danger. It is a powerful reminder of quiet heroism and steadfast commitment carried out away from the spotlight.
The medal itself has been lovingly preserved by Michelle’s mum, who has kept it safe in her home for over 80 years. To be able to see it in person was a truly special moment for staff and students alike, bringing history to life and connecting us to our shared Catholic heritage.
This story beautifully reflects our Mercy values - particularly service, community and generosity. It reminds us that we are part of a much wider Catholic family, one built on faith, sacrifice and love, passed down through generations. We are deeply grateful to Michelle and her family for sharing such a meaningful piece of their story with our school.
Moments like these help us to remember who we are, where we come from, and how we are called to live out our faith in our own daily acts of service and kindness. ✨
