New changes to the Driving Test coming in from next week
We’re making some subtle but meaningful changes to the practical driving test. 🚗
You may have seen that we have been trialling changes to the driving test at 20 driving test centres.
As part of the trial, learners drove on routes containing more high-speed, rural roads during their driving test, where location allowed. Now, we are rolling out the changes to all driving test centres in Great Britain from 24 November 2025.
As well as increasing the amount of time spent on higher-speed roads, we are:
✅ reducing the number of stops during the test from 4 to 3
✅ lowering the frequency of emergency stop exercises from 1 in 3 tests to 1 in 7
✅ adding flexibility to the independent driving segment, allowing it to run for the full duration of the test
These changes are designed to help improve road safety by better replicating the conditions motorists face in the real world. They won’t affect the skills needed to take a driving test.

🚘 A Thought for Drivers Today 🚘
When we first pass our driving test, most of us promise ourselves we’ll be careful, considerate drivers.
Mirrors, signals, speed checks everything drilled into us feels sharp and fresh.
But as the years pass, something happens.
Shortcuts creep in.
Bad habits settle.
We roll the dice with tailgating, we skip a signal because “no one’s around,” or we fly through a speed sign thinking “just this once.”
The truth is, the test might end, but the learning never does.
Every single journey is a test of patience, awareness, and kindness.
👉 That learner stalling at a roundabout? One day, that was you.
👉 That older driver going slower in front? One day, that will be you.
👉 That family crossing at the lights? Someone is waiting for them to get home safe tonight.
Driving isn’t just about rules; it’s about responsibility.
You’re not only in charge of your car, you’re part of a bigger picture every decision you make can ripple out to affect strangers, families, and lives you’ll never even know about.
So today, when you’re on the road, check in with yourself:
Am I rushing, or can I take a breath?
Am I reacting, or am I thinking ahead?
Am I making the road safer, or harder, for the people around me?
✨Being a good driver isn’t about passing the test years ago it’s about proving it, every single day. ✨
Stay safe.
Drive kind.
