Jen has run her own English tuition business for 15 years, teaching 1-1, but is now opening up Monday evenings for group sessions, covering KS2-KS4 with sessions delivered at The Thinker office, Rose Lane, Mossley Hill. £15 per hr session. Please share with anyone you know who may be looking for English tuition.

“We are really happy with your way of teaching. We have spent quite a lot of money and time with other places without seeing much progress, but you have made such a big difference with my daughter in a relatively short period of time. That’s why I would really appreciate it if you could teach my son as well.” — parent of a Y6 pupil

The Thinker CIC’s monthly Food for Thought event took place this morning at Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. After coffee and cake, we discussed what it means for something to be real, considering examples including luck, love, Santa, unicorns, The Walker Gallery itself, and God, after which we considered whether it is a good thing to be fully ‘tuned into’ reality. The second focus was on the concepts of ‘heaven’ and ‘hell’, looking at a selection of quotes from Sartre, Dickinson, CS Lewis, and Dante, and considering whether these concepts are to be understood as subjective states of mind or as a measure of virtue. After rich discussion, we ascended the grand staircase and headed for The Temptation of Christ by Scheffer, drawing a comparison between Christ and Satan with the figures of Plato and Aristotle in Raphael’s School of Athens — Plato pointing up to a higher reality than the world of the senses, accessed through the mind; and Aristotle, hands gesturing downwards, rooting reality in the observable, material world. We finished with some consideration of the influence of Plato on early Christian thought and Aristotle on Aquinas’ theology, before planning together an exciting programme of Food for Thought events for the next 12 months. Young Philosophers Training: Ages 11-16

Over the past year, we’ve had the pleasure of running our successful Young Philosophers Training enrichment programme with pupils at Dovedale Primary, Booker Primary, Greenbank Primary, Carleton House and Bishop Martin.

This academic year, we’re taking the next step.

We’re launching Young Philosophers Training: Senior — creating a bridge into secondary school for young people aged 11–16 who enjoy asking big questions, exploring different viewpoints and thinking for themselves.

Each week, a small group of no more than 12 young people will meet at Thinker HQ on Rose Lane, Mossley Hill for lively philosophical discussion, debate, games and challenges.

Sessions are led by Glenn Skelhorn, Royal Institute of Philosophy Tutor, trained specialist in facilitating philosophical dialogue, and founding director of The Thinker CIC.

There are no “right answers” to learn. Instead, the sessions give young people space to develop the confidence to think independently, explain their ideas, listen carefully, disagree respectfully and change their minds when there’s good reason to.

We’ll tackle questions such as:

💭 Is the mind separate from the body?
💭 What is the best way to make decisions?
💭 What does it mean to be a good thinker?
💭 Is it always right to tell the truth?

And it won’t all happen around the discussion table. Throughout the academic year there will also be games, competitions, challenges and projects designed to put those thinking skills into action, give the group things to work towards together and make philosophy something young people do, not simply something they talk about.

Participants will also work towards Bronze, Silver and Gold Young Philosopher Awards, recognising their development as thinkers and contributors to philosophical dialogue.

📍 Thinker HQ, 1 Rose Lane, Mossley Hill
📅 Tuesdays during term time
⏰ 5.30–6.45pm
🎓 Ages 11–16
👥 Maximum 12 young people
💷 £45 for the first half term — introductory rate

If you have a young person who is curious about the world, enjoys a good question, likes hearing what other people think — or simply needs somewhere their ideas will be taken seriously — we’d love to have them around the table.

Places are now open.

Food for Thought is back this September!

Our Food for Thought events have proved really popular, bringing people together in some wonderful locations across Liverpool to enjoy good conversation and explore some thought-provoking questions.

So far, we’ve visited:

🏛️ World Museum – Is it morally OK to display human remains?
💡 Victoria Gallery & Museum – What is a ‘lightbulb moment’?
🎨 Lady Lever Art Gallery – What is the difference between art and craft?
🌳 Calderstones Park – What is the value of ritual?
⛴️ Mersey Ferry – Is anything permanent?

After our summer break, we’re back on Saturday 5 September, 10am–12pm, at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.

We’ll start with some food and drink before exploring and discussing three works of art together. We’ll also be sharing ideas and making plans for future Food for Thought events.

It's a great opportunity to meet others, exchange ideas and look at familiar things from different perspectives.

Free to attend, with donations welcome.

A lovely bit of news to share:

I first met Charlie during the The Royal Institute of Philosophyonline philosophy courses we ran through lockdown. It was wonderful to hear later that those early encounters with philosophy had inspired him to take the subject further and study it at A-Level.

As a home-educated student, Charlie’s dad got in touch to ask whether I could tutor him through the entire A-Level Philosophy specification in just one year. Knowing how demanding the qualification is — and how much material there is to cover — I was clear from the outset that it would be a real challenge.

But we got through it! More importantly, Charlie put in a huge amount of hard work and showed real commitment to the subject throughout the year.

The result? An A grade in A-Level Philosophy.

A fantastic achievement, and thoroughly deserved. Well done, Charlie!

The Thinker CIC provides individual tuition and study programmes for home-educated students and others looking for additional academic support.
