At The Railway House, cooking is a rich and meaningful part of our curriculum, offering children authentic, hands-on experiences that inspire curiosity and independence 🍽️
Our preschool children were recently invited to take part in a carefully planned cooking experience, where they made both chicken and vegan dippers. This real-life provocation allowed children to explore food preparation while developing a deep respect for hygiene and safety.
With close guidance, the children learned about the importance of following strict food hygiene procedures. They wore appropriate PPE, carefully cleaned surfaces after handling raw chicken, and discussed why these steps are essential to keep ourselves and others safe.
The learning didn’t stop there — the children explored how food changes through cooking, talking about why chicken must be cooked thoroughly to ensure there is no pink meat. They were fascinated to use a temperature probe, discovering how we can check that food is safe to eat. This introduced early scientific thinking, problem-solving, and real-world application of knowledge.
Finally, the children enjoyed their homemade chicken dippers as a delicious starter to their lunch — a moment of pride and shared achievement.
A beautiful example of how everyday experiences, when approached with curiosity and care, create deep and meaningful learning 💛
