At The Railway House, cooking is a rich and meaningful part of our curriculum, offering children authentic, hands-on experiences that inspire curiosity and independence 🍽️

Our preschool children were recently invited to take part in a carefully planned cooking experience, where they made both chicken and vegan dippers. This real-life provocation allowed children to explore food preparation while developing a deep respect for hygiene and safety.

With close guidance, the children learned about the importance of following strict food hygiene procedures. They wore appropriate PPE, carefully cleaned surfaces after handling raw chicken, and discussed why these steps are essential to keep ourselves and others safe.

The learning didn’t stop there — the children explored how food changes through cooking, talking about why chicken must be cooked thoroughly to ensure there is no pink meat. They were fascinated to use a temperature probe, discovering how we can check that food is safe to eat. This introduced early scientific thinking, problem-solving, and real-world application of knowledge.

Finally, the children enjoyed their homemade chicken dippers as a delicious starter to their lunch — a moment of pride and shared achievement.

A beautiful example of how everyday experiences, when approached with curiosity and care, create deep and meaningful learning 💛

In our baby room, we gently welcomed the beauty of spring through a thoughtfully prepared sensory provocation 🌸

A large container filled with cornflower gloup and delicate petals invited our youngest children to explore using their senses. The soft textures, subtle colours, and natural elements created a calming and engaging experience, sparking curiosity and wonder.

The babies delighted in the feeling of the gloup between their fingers, watching how it moved and changed, fully immersed in the moment. These rich sensory opportunities support early exploration, allowing children to make connections with the world around them in their own unique way.

A simple yet meaningful invitation to explore — embracing the magic of spring through a The Curiosity Approach lens 🌿

This week we celebrated World Day in a truly meaningful and hands-on way 🌍

Our preschool children arrived to a beautiful provocation, carefully set up to inspire curiosity and conversation about the world around us. Through creative collage, they explored different parts of the world, sharing their ideas and thoughts as they made their own unique pictures.

We also had some wonderful discussions about the importance of bees and the vital role they play in keeping our world healthy 🐝

To take our learning even further, the children headed out into our local community for a litter pick. Equipped with protective gloves and litter pickers, they worked together to help care for their environment and keep our streets clean.

A fantastic day full of curiosity, creativity, and caring for our world — just what working towards being a Curiosity Approach setting is all about 💚

Ready. Set. Play.

After a busy reset of our resources following the break, everything has been thoughtfully prepared with care for our children and holiday club, which has been in full swing this week. 💛

🌿 Learning beyond four walls 🌿

Adventures at The Railway House 🤍

From exploring the river to discovering a tiny toad, our children led the way on a day full of curiosity, movement, and real-life learning.

Armed with clipboards and things to spot, they became explorers — observing, ticking, questioning, and thinking. We shared a story together in the forest, but just as importantly, some children chose to climb, balance, and explore the logs instead… because at our setting, every child’s way of learning is valued.

After reading a story about ducks, we went to visit them in real life — bringing learning to life in a way that truly sticks. 🦆📖

We also talked about caring for our environment, using our litter picker to help look after the space around us and teaching the children that their actions make a difference. 🌍

📚✨ World Book Day – Bringing the Love Back to Books! ✨📚

At The Railway House, books are at the heart of everything we do. As we work towards our Curiosity Approach accreditation, we believe stories spark imagination, deepen thinking and inspire our children’s everyday learning experiences. Books aren’t just for special occasions here, they are woven into our daily adventures and conversations.

For World Book Day, we celebrated by bringing the love to books! ❤️ Rather than focusing on costumes, we shone a light on the joy of sharing stories together.

Each child brought in a favourite book from home to share with their friends and practitioners. We had a choice of bedtime favourites and well loved classics. Children also came dressed in their cosy pj’s. We know that sharing familiar stories helps build confidence, language skills and a sense of belonging within our nursery family.

Our mindful practitioners have been creating beautiful invitations to learning by bringing some of the children’s favourite nursery stories to life.

In the mud kitchen, Stick Man inspired lots of imaginative play as the children explored sticks, mud and ice. Our babies enjoyed a special trip to the river as they went looking for the Gruffalo, sparking curiosity and wonder in the outdoor environment. Meanwhile, our toddlers became busy builders, working together to construct the houses from The Three Little Pigs.

These experiences help deepen children’s love of stories while encouraging creativity, exploration and collaborative play ❤️

Our nursery children have been busy getting creative and caring for nature this week 🌿🐦

They made their own bird feeders using pine cones, lard, seeds and string, then headed outside to hang them in the trees to help our garden birds through the winter.

A lovely hands-on activity that teaches kindness, creativity, and looking after wildlife 💚

Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
Sugar is sweet,
And so are you ❤️

What a beautiful week filled with love as always.

Our pre-school children explored friendship and kindness, our babies delighted in calming sensory experiences, and our toddlers enjoyed a magical teddy bears’ picnic story — followed by creating their own fancy playdough cupcakes to bring it to life.

To finish, everyone came together to share a special Valentine’s lunch, with time to connect, laugh, and simply enjoy being together.

So many precious moments, so much warmth, and love all around 💖

The potion turns cloudy, then sunny, then green,
It smells like a forest crossed with a bean.
We encourage with laughter, we label it “FUN,”
And tuck it away when the brewing is done. ❤️

What a great example of child-led learning at The Railway House.

Last week, a small group of children independently chose to explore our fantastic boat area, where imaginative play quickly set sail and turned into physical challenge and friendly competition.

The boat became a pirate ship, children bravely walked the plank, and the adventure continued as they measured who could jump the furthest. This spontaneous burst of play was full of creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving, showing just how powerful learning can be when children take the lead on their own imaginative journey. 🏴‍☠️✨
