Grabbing those last minute bits for Back to School, don’t forget to get your child a calculator that’s going to make maths easier for them rather than harder!

✨ CALCULATORS ✨

Get yourself a good scientific calculator and stick with it, they should cost around £15 and you can buy them from the local supermarkets - £11 with a clubcard from Tesco.

It’s important that you know how to use all the functions you need on YOUR calculator as they’re all different!

I have seen students struggle using the calculators I’ve crossed out below - although these are sold as scientific, you can only type one thing into the display at a time which is fine in younger years but makes answering GCSE questions very difficult!!

Just because it’s cheaper (eg. £3 at the works) doesn’t mean it’s better! You want a calculator that can easily do a combination of the below:

• Square & Square Root
• Cube & Cube Root
• Other Powers & Roots
• Fractions
• Sin/Cos/Tan

📚 Summer Practice 📚 A great way to keep your maths knowledge ticking over during the school holidays is to complete the Corbett Maths 5-a-day (GCSE, 9-1)

This is split into different sections:
• Numeracy 5aday – aiming for Grades 1/2/3.
• Foundation – aiming for Grades 3/4.
• Foundation Plus – aiming for Grades 4/5/6.
• Higher – aiming for Grades 6/7.
• Higher Plus – aiming for Grades 8/9.

This can be done daily or a couple of times a week, so that students aren’t spending 6 weeks without any maths at all! Especially those going into Year 11!

For students not in Y11, step down a level or two for some questions to answer.

I have attached examples of the questions from today (4th August)

✨ GCSE MATHS - Tomorrow!✨ How to ACTUALLY use your calculator to your advantage? 🧮 Here are 5 techniques to speed up some questions in your exam from your local GCSE maths tutor 👩🏻‍🏫

1️⃣ HCF & LCM
• Old Casio: Product of Primes (no need to draw a factor tree!) Type in the number, 120, then press equals, shift, FACT. ✖️
• Newer Casio: HCF & LCM can be found by pressing ‘Catalog’ - ‘Numeric Calc’ - GCD (HCF) or LCM. Then type your two numbers, separated by a comma, and close the brackets!

2️⃣ Table of Values - useful for plotting a graph! Press menu, then the correct option (depends on your calc model) 📈

3️⃣ Converting between fractions & decimals using the SD button (or the FORMAT button on the newer calculator)

4️⃣ Converting between TOP HEAVY fractions & MIXED numbers using the SD button (press SHIFT first, then SD) or the FORMAT button on the newer calculator

5️⃣ Always write down everything you do on your calculator as this is part of your working! Also, make sure you write down at least 4-5 decimal places before rounding your final answer!

✨ MATHS REVISION TIPS ✨

With only a few days to go until the first maths GCSE paper, here are some top tips:

1️⃣ Use Past/Predicted Papers (but don’t pay for any, there are plenty of free ones available!)

1st Class Maths have a predicted paper - complete this in timed conditions to check that you can work to the strict timings of the GCSE

2️⃣ Focus on high-yield topics - the ones that come up every year & score you lots of marks! Check out the topic % breakdown from 1st Class Maths

3️⃣ Make sure you get enough sleep the night before the exam! Cramming into the early hours does not help, it hinders your ability in the exam!

Revision Materials
* Maths Genie: past papers and video solutions
* Corbett Maths: 5-a-day questions, topic revision
* Dr Frost Maths: full coverage
* 1st Class Maths - topic practice
