We currently have a few spaces specifically within our younger 5–9 Learning Hub group. 💙

Across Tuesdays and Thursdays we mix English & maths with projects, art, cooking, sport and hands-on learning, plus Forest School every Tuesday afternoon. 🌳

Small groups, plenty of variety and lots of opportunities to learn, play and make friends.

𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞.

We’re not trying to become a school with hundreds of pupils.

The fact that our Hubs are small means our team can actually know the young people.

Who needs a bit of space when they arrive.

Who'll talk for 45 minutes about their latest interest if you let them.

Who finds writing difficult but has loads to say.

Who needs encouragement to have a go.

Who needs reminding that they absolutely can do hard things.

That doesn't mean every day is easy or that every child gets to do exactly what they fancy.

It means relationships matter here.

And for lots of the children and teenagers we meet, being known makes a difference.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐇𝐮𝐛?

It’s probably one of the questions we get asked most.

The honest answer is, quite a lot!

There’s English and maths, projects, science, creative work, games, practical learning, conversations that go completely off on a tangent and sometimes become the best bit of learning that day.

There’s also time to play, make friends, eat together and just be part of a group.

We have structure and expectations, but we’re small enough to get to know the children and adapt what we’re doing when we need to.

𝐀𝐧𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐭 𝐚 𝟗–𝟏𝟐 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐢𝐬 𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐘 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐤𝐢𝐝𝐬? 😂

We know this age can be a funny in-between stage.

They’re not teenagers yet, but they’re growing up fast and often ready for a bit more independence, challenge and time with children closer to their own age.

That’s where our 𝐌𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐬 come in.

They’re part of Learning Hub on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so they still join in with the wider group and get all the good stuff that comes with being part of that community.

But they also get 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫, where activities and learning can be pitched more towards their age, interests and abilities.

It works as a lovely bridge between Learning Hub and Teen Hub, rather than suddenly expecting children to make a big leap when they turn 12.

We usually look at moving across to Teen Hub during the term they turn 12 or the September afterwards, depending on the individual child and what feels right for them.

𝐀𝐧𝐝… 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐌𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩. 🙌

We’d really love to welcome a few more boys and girls aged around 9–11 into the group this term.

So if you’ve got a tween who could do with some learning, some good company, a bit of independence and a regular group to be part of, they might just fit right in.

𝐀𝐧𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐭 𝐚 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐨…

…can talk for 47 minutes about Minecraft but gives you absolutely nothing when you ask what they did today?

…would rather negotiate the terms of completing one maths question than just do the maths question?

…knows exactly what they want to learn about and has very little interest in what you had planned?

…needs to know who’s going to be there, what’s happening, what time it finishes and preferably what snacks are available before agreeing to anything?

…says “𝐈 𝐂𝐀𝐍’𝐓 𝐃𝐎 𝐈𝐓” approximately three seconds after seeing it for the first time?

Yep. We know a few of those too 😂

That’s part of why our Hubs are small. We have time to actually get to know the child behind all of that, what gets them interested, what puts the brakes on, when they need a push, when they need some space and what helps them have a go.

We definitely don’t have a magic wand.

But we do have 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩𝐬, 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐬, 𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐝𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬

𝐒𝐨 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐓𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐇𝐮𝐛 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫?

Quite a bit, actually.

We’ve spent time looking at what our teenagers need as they get older - not just socially, but educationally and in preparing for whatever comes next.

This year we’re weaving Functional Skills English and Maths more into Teen Hub, alongside hands-on projects, wider life and digital learning, practical skills, wellbeing and plenty of opportunities to work together.

For some young people, qualifications are an important next step.

For others, the starting point might be getting comfortable learning in a group again, making friends or rebuilding some confidence.

Both matter.
