Wet Wellies and River Studies at Colin Glen.

Our Year 11 geographers headed out to Colin Glen on Thursday to gather crucial field data for their GCSE River Study. The weather gods smiled on us and kept the rain at bay, meaning we only had to contend with the water already in the river.

Throughout the day, students meticulously measured channel width, cross-sectional depth, river velocity, and bedload characteristics. Naturally, this high-level scientific investigation was accompanied by the classic fieldwork rite of passage: discovering that water can, in fact, enter a wellie from the top if you step in a hole that’s deeper than you anticipated.

Despite a few soggy socks and full wellies, the morale was high, the data collection was a success, and Year 11 represented the department brilliantly. A massive well done to everyone for a fantastic day out in the field!

On Tuesday evening we held our Annual Sports Awards, highlighting both outstanding team achievements and individual success. The highlight of the evening was an inspirational speech by our guest speaker, ex-student, Olympian, and Irish international Matthew Nelson, who brought his wealth of experience from earning 126 caps for the Ireland Hockey Team. A massive thank you to Matthew, and to everyone who attended, supported, and cheered on our students to make it such a memorable evening. Wishing all of our sports students the very best of luck with the year ahead.
