Bad news for people with small calves 🦵
If your calves are tiny, you might want to blame your parents, not your training. Unfortunately genetics run the show here. That’s why some lifters train calves for years and barely see progress, while guys who never stepped foot in a gym walk around with giant “dad calves.”

Research has consistently shown that the calf muscles, especially the soleus, are dominated by slow-twitch fibers, which are built for endurance but far less responsive to hypertrophy than fast-twitch fibers. That’s one big reason your calves don’t blow up the same way your quads or chest might.

A study in the Journal of Applied Physiology confirmed this, finding the soleus to be made up of about 70–90% slow-twitch fibers, highly fatigue-resistant, but resistant to growth.

Another study in the European Journal of Applied Physiology reported that up to 80% of calf size and shape is determined by genetics, especially muscle belly length and tendon insertion points. Some people are born with long, full bellies that create “diamond calves,” while others have short bellies and higher insertions that make calves look smaller, no matter how hard they train.

Together, that creates the perfect storm: a muscle designed not to grow, with its ceiling mostly set by DNA.

Training still helps though. You can build strength, shape, definition, and add some size. But when it comes to MASSIVE calves…it’s your genetics (and your parents), not your program, running the show.

Is the Anabolic Window real?
For years, lifters were told we had a tiny 30–60 minute window after training to slam a protein shake, or risk losing all our hard-earned gains.

But does the “anabolic window” actually hold up under science?

A 2013 meta-analysis from the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition reviewed multiple studies on pre- and post-workout protein timing. The conclusion? It’s your total daily protein intake that truly drives muscle growth, not the exact minute you consume it.

And a 2017 study published in PeerJ confirmed the same: overall protein intake throughout the day matters far more than nutrient timing.

So no, you don’t need to sprint to your shaker bottle after your last rep.

Bottom line: Hit your daily protein goal. Your muscles will be just fine 💪
