As we wrap up the final lessons of the year, I wanted to take a moment to say a huge thank you to everyone.

This term has been fantastic, and I am incredibly proud of the progress each student has made. Your hard work and dedication behind the kit have really paid off. Parents, thank you for your constant support - it makes all the difference!

I hope you all have a wonderful, restful Christmas break filled with music and joy. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone back in the studio, refreshed and ready to get back at it in the New Year.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Andrew

"Do They Know It's Christmas?" is the historic 1984 charity single created by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure and performed by the all-star supergroup Band Aid to raise money for Ethiopian famine relief.

The song's rhythmic foundation is unique: it begins with an electronic, sampled African-style rhythm, but the powerful live drumming was performed by Phil Collins, who contributed a dynamic, heavy, and signature tom-filled sound over the electronic track.

A fun fact from the recording session is that Collins, despite being a massive star, waited patiently all day for his turn while the vocalists were recorded, and when he finally got behind the kit, he was so eager that he reportedly nailed the entire drum part in just one or two takes, providing the driving rhythm for this monumental single which quickly became the fastest-selling in UK history.

Christmas Wrapping - the Waitresses | Beats Drum Studio 05/12/2025

"Christmas Wrapping," a 1981 new wave classic by The Waitresses, is beloved for its quirky, spoken-word narrative about an overworked woman's attempts to avoid holiday madne and a persistent suitor, only to find a surprise romantic meeting on Christmas Eve.

The surpisingly intricate drum part was played by Billy Ficca, a musician known for his work with the band Television. Ficca's drumming elevates the track far beyond a typical pop song; it features syncopated hi-hat work and tricky fills that makes it a challenging and fun piece to play.

Last Christmas - Wham | Beats Drum Studio 04/12/2025

Today we have Wham!'s 1984 hit, "Last Christmas," a bittersweet synth-pop classic that layers a festive, catchy sound over a story of holiday heartbreak and betrayal.

A fascinating fact about the track is that it features no live drummer; the entire percussion track was programmed by George Michael himself using a LinnDrum drum machine.

In a demonstration of his solo genius, George Michael wrote, produced, and performed every element of the song, including the synthesizers and the sleigh bells. The drum programming is distinctive for its rigid, steady backbeat and somewhat unconventional, heavy snare fills, which gives the track its unmistakable, signature 1980s electronic pop sound.

Fairytale of New York - Pogues | Beats Drum Studio 03/12/2025

This one is a classic "Fairytale of New York" is a powerful and unconventional 1987 Christmas ballad by The Pogues featuring Kirsty MacColl, which tells a melancholic story of failed romance and shattered hopes for an Irish immigrant couple in New York, set against a backdrop of Celtic instruments and orchestral strings. The drumming on the track was provided by The Pogues' drummer, Andrew Ranken, who is known for grounding the band's "folk-punk" sound. Ranken's part is significant because it shifts between a swaying 6/8 feel in the ballad sections and a more driving groove in the energetic parts, giving the song its unique, dynamic structure.

Happy Xmas (War Is Over) - John Lennon | Beats Drum Studio 02/12/2025

This time we have "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" a classic 1971 Christmas song by John Lennon and Yoko Ono (with the Plastic Ono Band and the Harlem Community Choir) that serves as both a Christmas greeting and a powerful protest against the Vietnam War, urging listeners that "War is over, if you want it." The drumming and festive sleigh bells on the track were performed by legendary session musician Jim Keltner. The recording, co-produced by Phil Spector, utilized his famous "Wall of Sound" technique, which gives Keltner's drums a steady, strong, and heavily echoed quality.
