Modes are stupid. There I said it.
There is only the major scale which is also the minor scale.
Learning a song as a series of acrobatic moves you have to remember is the death of your interest; I call it ‘infinite learning.’
Learning a song by the chord sequences and knowing the note names leads to playing everything by ear.
Choose the narrow path.

Christmas songs (not carols) are all 6th chords, mostly.
Rudolph, I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus and Holly Jolly Christmas all use the C6 (CEGA) chord as the melodic basis.
C6 is also A minor 7. Using both the tonic and its relative minor to create melody.
Wonderful and easy improvisation and writing tools; 6th chords and minor 7s. Only 4 notes.
Major in Latin means ‘greater. Minor means ‘smaller.’
A major chord has a larger sized 3rd (4 semi-tones) compared to a minor chord’s 3rd (3 semitones.)
They do not mean ‘happy’ and ‘sad.’
The whole language is visual.
Diminished = smaller
Augmented = bigger
Half diminished = half as small.
The clues are in the names always.
All the melodies are just 6th chords. G6 for example; GBDE. You can play nearly everything from that with simple suspensions and resolves.

Exhibit B: this is what I call ‘infinity learning.’
Every chord listed on this page is the simple letter skip game: ACE, BDF, CEG, DFA, EGB, FAC, GBD… there are only 7.
Granted there are some sharps and flats in some keys but they are all very close in frets to each other.
To learn music this horribly pedantic and ego stroking way is a one way ticket to giving up when approaching higher levels of playing.
Abandon this ‘reference the appendices’ way of learning and just learn the simple letter skip game.
ACE, BDF, CEG… etc. Start there.
Music is easy when it’s a concept.

Exhibit A: this ridiculous thing is the type of disgusting twisted pedantry that gets called ‘music theory’ and puts lots of people off.
Seemingly infinite learning; never moving to practicality.
All of harmonic theory can be understood with a little simple letter skip game that create the 3 notes of a chord:
ACE, BDF, CEG, DFA, EGB, FAC, GBD. That’s it! There are only 7 combinations forever.
Start there. Learn where the notes are first. The diagram below is pure pretentiousness designed for intellectual ego stroking.
A little organ tune I composed using the same G6 diminished concept only you don’t play the most dissonant diminished notes in this style; it ruins the vibe.
No memory required after learning the two chords in the concept.
Super easy spontaneous music.
Piano improvisation using the G6 diminished harmonic concept. As easy as two chords! Nothing to remember in comparison to learning a string of thousands of notes on sheet music or TAB.
I keep telling people to learn theory and not many would believe it changes everything. It makes music fun and spontaneous.
