This weekโ€™s theme: SEAG COMPREHENSION. ๐Ÿ“
We will be focusing on:
โ˜‘ Retrieval
โ˜‘ Inference
โ˜‘ Vocabulary
โ˜‘ Imagery

Today we are looking at vocabulary questions. Specifically synonyms and antonyms.
๐Ÿ“š Synonym: a word that means the same or almost the same as another word.
Example: happy โ€” joyful.
๐Ÿ“šAntonym: a word that means the opposite of another word.
Example: hot โ€” cold.

Finding synonyms & antonyms in SEAG passages โ€” quick guide ๐Ÿ”Ž๐Ÿ“š

โ˜‘ Read the sentence around the word โ€” context gives meaning. ๐Ÿง โžก๏ธ
โ˜‘ Check prefixes/suffixes (un-, re-, -less) to spot opposites or related words. ๐Ÿ”โŒ
โ˜‘ Try swapping a possible synonym/antonym into the sentence โ€” does it still make sense? ๐Ÿ”„โœ…โŒ
โ˜‘ Mind tone & intensity โ€” synonyms can be milder/stronger (cold vs freezing). ๐ŸŒก๏ธ
โ˜‘ If stuck, underline the sentence and scan the paragraph for a matching idea. โœ๏ธ๐Ÿ”

This weekโ€™s theme: SEAG COMPREHENSION. ๐Ÿ“

We will be focusing on:
โ˜‘ Retrieval
โ˜‘ Inference
โ˜‘ Vocabulary
โ˜‘ Imagery

Today we are looking at inference questions. These can be tricky for 10/11 year olds, so it is important to teach the skill.
Inference = reading between the lines โ€” work out what the author implies but doesnโ€™t say outright.

๐Ÿ“š Quick guide to retrieval questions

๐Ÿ“Emotions: spot actions/words that show feelings (e.g., pen drops โ†’ anxious) ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ๐Ÿ–Š๏ธ
๐Ÿ“Traits & motives: choices reveal personality (careful packing โ†’ cautious) ๐Ÿงญ๐Ÿช–
๐Ÿ“Setting/situation: sensory clues show place/time (seagulls + breeze โ†’ beach/summer) ๐ŸŒŠโ˜€๏ธ
๐Ÿ“Authorโ€™s intent/tone: word choice creates mood (โ€œaggressivelyโ€ โ†’ threatening) ๐ŸŽญ๐ŸŒช๏ธ
๐Ÿ“Logic & missing details: fill gaps with what must be true ๐Ÿงฉโœ…

We will be focusing on:
โ˜‘ Retrieval
โ˜‘ Inference
โ˜‘ Vocabulary
โ˜‘ Imagery

Today we are looking at retrieval questions:
Retrieval = finding information directly from the text. ๐Ÿ”

๐Ÿ“š Quick guide to retrieval questions

Direct retrieval (What/Where/When) โ€” find the fact in the text ๐Ÿ“
Why (explicit reason) โ€” look for โ€œbecause/so/thereforeโ€ ๐Ÿงโžก๏ธ
Find & copy โ€” copy exact words (watch word limits!) โœ‚๏ธ๐Ÿ“
True / False โ€” only whatโ€™s in the passage โœ…โŒโ“
Multi-point retrieval โ€” give 2+ separate facts from the text 2๏ธโƒฃโœณ๏ธ
Tips: skim โ†’ scan โ†’ underline. Fast + precise = score! โšก๐ŸŽฏ
