🍁 Autumn Magic at The Japanese Garden at Cowden! ⛩️✨

We were blessed with fantastic weather for our two adult field trips on the 3rd and 10th of October! ☀️

Our adult artists enjoyed the flexibility to tailor their creative day—some spent the entire day sketching and painting plein air in the crisp autumn air (popping into the warm Bothy for lunch!), while others split their time between morning outdoor studies and afternoon studio work.

Using Sumi-e style brush pen techniques and fluid watercolours, everyone captured the tranquility of the grounds—from delicate bridges and pagodas to reflections and rich autumn foliage.

Swipe through to see the wonderful ink sketches and finished watercolours created by our talented students! A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for such a peaceful, inspiring day out. 🎨🍂

Our Young Creatives 2 students have been diving deep into lino block printing! They worked through researching, designing, test-printing, and tweaking their blocks before pulling these final editions.

Check out these two fantastic student examples:

🔹 A rich, organic arts and crafts inspired tile print showing amazing texture and pattern work.
🔹 A bold, atmospheric moonlit composition with sharp contrast and clean lines.
Huge well done to these two artists for such brilliant dedication to the printmaking process! 💙

🐉 Bringing Fantastical Creatures to Life! ✨🗿

Our Young Creative Level 1 Art Class students turned into 3D sculptors this week! Using cardboard forms and sculpting wire armatures, they built up structural bases before layering mod roc (plaster bandage) to bring these amazing, mythical beasts into form.

Look at those dynamic poses, curving tails, and incredible textures! Next step: painting and adding final decorative details to finish their magical creations. 🎨👀

Scroll through to check out these impressive 3D sculptures in progress!

Pop Art Meets Traditional Chinese Landscapes! ✨

Our Once a Month Art Class (P6–S6) at Linlithgow Bowling Club produced these stunning pieces inspired by Roy Lichtenstein’s Chinese Landscape series!

Our young artists explored how Lichtenstein reinterpreted ancient, serene landscapes through a bold Pop Art lens.

Key elements embraced in their artwork:

Majestic Karst Mountains: Building dramatic height and towering forms using dense Ben-Day dot patterns.

Flowing Water Features: Incorporating rivers, waterfalls, and lakes to guide the eye across the canvas.

The Power of White Space: Balancing busy patterned areas with deliberate blank, quiet spaces to evoke traditional mist and atmosphere.

Look at the fantastic precision and thoughtful composition in these finished canvases!

Young Creatives Level 2 (S1 - S6 age group) in Linlithgow Bowling Club

Lesson 4

Theme: Developing Lino Block Designs Inspired by William De Morgan 🎨✨

Our Young Creatives Level 2 group has been diving into the world of Arts and Crafts ceramic designer William De Morgan! Known for his intricate animal motifs, flowing curves, and bold botanical patterns, De Morgan’s classic tiles provided the perfect spark for our students' initial lino block printing concepts. 🌿🐟

Inside the design process:

📚 Inspiration & Research: Studying De Morgan’s stylised creatures, repeated floral patterns, and reference photos of wildlife.

✏️ Initial Sketches & Layouts: Testing thumbnail grids to explore line, balance, and creature poses—from Highland cows to playful foxes.

🖊️ Refining for Lino: Scaling up chosen concepts, like this fantastic twin-fish motif, into bold line drawings ideal for carving and printing.

We love seeing these initial pencil sketches come to life before the carving stage.

Watch this space to see their final lino prints! 🖼️✨

Lesson 4

🗺️ Mixed Media Cartography at Linlithgow Art School 🎨

In our recent After-School Art Session, students explored the art of map modification, drawing inspiration from Jayne Stokes and Louise Hopkins.

Using real map bases, our artists built up layers using paint, drawing, paper cut-outs, and mini 3D elements to turn simple geographical routes into fantastical adventures!

Check out some of these incredible details—from traveling dragons to custom key legends. 📍✨
