Young Creatives Level 2: Drawing inspired by William Kentridge 🎨✨

Our Level 2 artists dived into the fluid world of William Kentridge, exploring his distinctive approach to charcoal drawing and stop-frame animation after watching a short interview and his film Mine.

Working from a view of Venice, the students began gestural charcoal works where the eraser became a tool for making marks rather than fixing mistakes. By lifting tone, they captured moving water, light reflections, and boats drifting down the canal. Following Kentridge's practice, they also documented the progression of their drawings on their phones at key stages.

They’ve made a fantastic start, and we’ll aim to finish these pieces next week! Take a look at their progress so far 👇

Young Creatives Art Class Level 1 in Linlithgow Bowling Club

Summer and Autumn Term 2026

Lesson 1

Capturing the quiet majesty of the Hague coastline! 🌊 Charcoal is such a wonderfully expressive medium, and our Level 1 Young Creatives embraced it brilliantly this week.

Using a photograph of the beach, the students explored key landscape terminology, experimented with dynamic compositions, and considered how different formats—especially sweeping, panoramic views—can convey the flat, expansive nature of the Dutch coast.

Working with a combination of willow charcoal, compressed charcoal, and various erasers, they learned to subtract tone to lift out light, capture rolling waves, and build subtle atmospheric textures. Rather than simply copying the reference photo, each student found their own distinct way to appropriate and interpret the scene.

Summer and Autumn Term 2026

Lesson 1

Inspired by the celebrated Indigenous Australian artist Emily Kame Kngwarray, our Young Artists explored how abstract art carries its own rich origin story. 🎨✨

Drawing inspiration from the central Australian desert landscape—its warm, earthy colour palettes, plant roots, topography, and traditional body paintwork—the children created these vibrant works.

Listening to Aboriginal music as they worked, some students wove animals into lyrical abstractions of lines and circles, whilst others leaned fully into bold abstraction.

Aren’t these artworks just bursting with life? Scroll through to see their brilliant creations! 👇

What a fantastic day spent outdoors for our Summer Outdoor Painting: En Plein Air masterclass! 🎨✨

A bit of wind and overcast weather couldn't slow us down—in fact, the elements brought us the most dramatic skies, shifting natural light, and incredible cloud formations over Linlithgow Loch and the Peel.

Our artists did a wonderful job navigating the fast-changing light, capturing atmospheric perspectives, and working on real-time colour mixing to create some truly stunning sketches and paintings.

Scroll below to see our artists hard at work in the elements and a look at the incredible artwork created throughout the day! 🖼️👇

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and embraced the Scottish summer weather.
