Wound healing guide 🐴🩸

All wounds go through four stages of healing. Understanding these phases and how care may differ between each one can help make sure your horse’s wounds heal as quickly as possible while minimising complications.

1️⃣ Haemostasis – Blood flow is reduced to create a blood clot
2️⃣ Inflammation – Cells move from the blood to the tissue to start cleaning the wound
3️⃣ Proliferation – The wound starts to heal. New skin cells begin to grow from outer edges of healthy wounds, and fibrous tissue will cover the wound’s larger areas to provide protection
4️⃣ Maturation – Newly laid down tissue strengthens over time.

During proliferation the delicate new skin cells can be damaged by products containing oils or alcohols which can delay healing. We recommend speaking to your vet before applying any creams or treatments to a wound, to make sure they’re suitable for your horse.
