A stark picture is emerging from new FOI data on dyslexia support in England. Fewer than half of local authorities employ specialists to assess dyslexia, and around a third offer no guidance at all to schools. Of the 151 authorities contacted, 82% responded, yet fewer than 10% could answer all questions.

The impact on pupils is significant. In 2025, only 21% of pupils with a Specific Learning Difficulty met expected standards at Key Stage 2, compared with 74% of pupils with no SEN. At GCSE, just one in five achieved Grade 5 in English and Maths, and only 39.5% reached Grade 4, compared with 72.3 per cent of pupils without SEN.

Urgent action is needed. Read more: https://bit.ly/49RfNeM

The British Dyslexia Association is calling on the government and local authorities to record dyslexia in education datasets so dyslexic children are no longer invisible in the system, and support can be properly planned and monitored.

This would make sure dyslexic learners are visible, allowing local authorities and government to track outcomes, plan services, target support, and understand where provision is working or not.

This is essential if we are serious about improving outcomes for dyslexic learners.

To every young person being underestimated and not given the support they need:
You are not the issue.

You were never the problem.

The problem is the lack of clear pathways to diagnosis, understanding in education, and access to the right support. When we change the system, we change outcomes. Let’s keep pushing!
