We are excited to announce that Dr Ali Aliyu, a colleague within our School of Engineering, has received a capital grant from the Royal Society.
The project, which will benefit from this grant is the 'Green hydrogen production by controlling microbubble generation in electrolytic cells'.
This proposal is motivated by the need to improve the current contribution of green hydrogen within the entire hydrogen mix which currently stands at 5%. The low efficiency of current alkaline electrolysis (AEL) cells is a barrier to producing clean, cheap hydrogen. The ultimate aim is to produce a new generation of AEL hydrogen production cell that is more efficient than current ones using electrodes with functional micro-engineered surfaces.

Earlier this month, Prof Mini Rai attended and was a panellist at the ‘Our Fragile Space’ photography exhibition, by leading science communicator and space photographer Max Alexander.
The UK ESA astronaut, Mr Tim Peake, Head of the UK Space Agency, Paul Bate, CEO of Lloyd’s, John Neal, STFC Skills Factory Director, Dr Joanna Hart, Director at Alden, Prof. Joanne Wheeler and Founder of Expanded Universe Ltd, Dr Stuart Clarke, all spoke at this event. The event created awareness on the growing issues with space debris and sustainability of space for improving lives on Earth.
Researchers at the Lincoln Centre for Autonomous Systems, co-powered by the School of Computer Science and Engineering, are developing autonomous space robots to remove debris. We would like to thank Dr Mitchum Poozhiyil (PDRA), Manu Nair (PhD Student) and Dr Amir Esfahani (Associate Professor) for supporting this exciting research on cleaning up space.
