Darren is an outdoor instructor, mountain leader and has his own business Boot Routes. He previously worked Yorkshire Wildlife Trust running walking safaris and wildlife photography but now works for the RSPB. Darren is a keen birder, wildlife enthusiast, former wildlife crime officer, in mountain rescue and marine rescue.

“𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦”
Last week, during a group briefing, a participant on the walk asked “𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦”.
A great question! One I often think about but one I’m rarely asked.
🚶🏼 In general, in gentle terrain, I prefer to be at the back, everyone is in front of me, I can see everyone and I can chat/offer support to the people moving less quickly.
🚶🏼I’m almost certainly going to move around the group and try and chat to everyone at some point
🚶🏼If the terrain is trickier or a risk is ahead I’ll likely appear at the front, leading the way, pointing out risks of good hand holds or whatever!
🚶🏼I like people to feel like I’m just part of the group when things are going well. I may just be chatting, but inside I’m watching, thinking, role modelling, anticipating
🚶🏼I want people to feel supported and confidence in me if things go wrong but I don’t want people to feel “lead” all the time, suffocated or marched.

About 10 years ago I got the leather Mammuts, 18 months ago I got the scarpa boots and trainers…. 9 times out of 10 I chose the old Mammuts!
What’s your go to footwear and why?

Ps they look wrecked but I’ve washed an reproofed them regularly and are just about watertight! Must have done 1000s of miles, the scarpa boots I’ve hardly worn let in water already 🤷🏻♂️

Eryri full of life this time of year… we had great views of ring ouzel, fledgling wheatear, close up ravens, chough, a hen harrier, frogs, stonechat and the upland plants you’d expect this time of year… how many can you name?
