For Roald Dahl day the preschool at city did a story walk to Charlie and the chocolate factory! We all loved looking at the pictures and doing a mini activity based on what was happening at each point in the story. Hunting for golden tickets, playing in a chocolate river, and listening to squirrel noises.
We also made some yummy blueberry muffins to take home and share with our family’s 😋

🩹🩺 Celebrating National First Aid Day at Hykeham! 🩺🩹

This afternoon, our children explored a fantastic First Aid & People Who Help Us tuff tray, thoughtfully set up by Courtney and Michelle. 🥼👩‍⚕️❤️

We began by sitting together on the carpet and chatting about times when we might have needed first aid, visited the doctor, or had somebody help us when we were poorly. The children were fantastic at sharing their own experiences and listening to one another. 💬✨

Then it was time to help our poorly babies! 👶🩹 The children carefully used plasters and bandages, giving them a brilliant opportunity to strengthen their fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and dexterity as they peeled, positioned, wrapped and fastened them.

Throughout their play, we introduced and reinforced lots of new vocabulary, including poorly, plaster, bandage, doctor, temperature, thermometer and heartbeat, supporting the children's communication and language development. 🗣️

Using their imaginations, the children took on the role of doctors and nurses, exploring the different medical tools and beginning to understand what they are used for. We discovered that a thermometer can check our temperature and a stethoscope can be used to listen to our heartbeat. 🩺❤️

Activities like this support so many areas of learning, including:

🌿 Communication & Language – learning new vocabulary, talking about experiences and listening to others
🌿 Physical Development – developing fine motor control through plasters and bandaging
🌿 PSED – developing empathy, care and an understanding of helping others
🌿 Understanding the World – learning about doctors, nurses, first aid and people who help us
🌿 Expressive Arts & Design – using imagination through role play and creating their own scenarios

A lovely afternoon of learning through play, caring for others and discovering more about the important people who help to keep us safe and well. 🥰🩹🩺

🥕🥬🫛 What’s cooking in Gruffalo Granny’s kitchen? 🫛🥬🥕

Following our excitement around the brand-new Gruffalo Granny story, Susie set up a very special Gruffalo Granny’s Stew Tuff Tray for our Preschool Adventurers! 📖🌿🍲

Armed with our safety knives, recipe cards and lots of curiosity, the children got busy preparing Granny’s stew!

🥬 We tore the leaves from the cabbage and leeks
🫛 Snipped and cut the green beans
🌱 Opened up pea pods to discover the little peas hiding inside — and carefully counted how many we found
🧅 Peeled back the layers of an onion… but decided we definitely shouldn’t cut that one unless we wanted a few tears! 😂😭
🥕 Chopped and explored the different vegetables
💪 And we even tackled the turnip! We quickly discovered it was much harder and heavier than some of our other vegetables, giving us lots to talk about as we compared their weight, texture and how easy or difficult they were to cut.

But we weren’t just chopping! 👀📋

The children followed our recipe cards, looking carefully to find out how many of each ingredient Granny needed for her stew. This brought early mathematics naturally into our play as we counted, matched quantities and checked whether we had the correct amount. 🔢

All that peeling, tearing, opening, holding and cutting was fantastic for developing fine motor control, hand strength, hand-eye coordination and bilateral coordination — all important skills that help prepare little hands for things such as using scissors, fastening clothes and early writing. ✋✏️

We also developed our communication and language, learnt new vocabulary, explored textures, compared hard/soft and heavy/light, practised problem-solving and, most importantly, worked together and had lots of fun! 🥰

📚 A story became an experience, an experience became an opportunity to explore, and our Adventurers did what they do best… LEARN THROUGH PLAY! 🌿🔍

There’s nothing quite like the excitement of opening a BRAND NEW BOOK together! 🥰

Today our little Adventurers joined Susie for the wonderful Gruffalo Granny — and as you can see, we were completely captivated! 👀📖✨

We love bringing stories to life at Fun Farm. Sharing books together encourages imagination, listening, language, communication and a lifelong love of reading — all while creating those lovely little moments together. ❤️

And of course… when there’s a Gruffalo adventure involved, we don’t just read the story… we EXPLORE it! 🐾🌳🔍

✂️ Snip, snip… Spaghetti Haircuts! 🍝
Hykeham have been busy at the Spaghetti Salon today! 🥰
Using scissors to give their spaghetti some rather fabulous haircuts, the children have been developing those all-important fine motor skills, strengthening their little hands and practising hand-eye coordination and scissor control.
Activities like this are a fun way to build the skills children will later use for drawing, writing, dressing and other everyday tasks.
We talked about long and short, watched what happened as we snipped the spaghetti and, most importantly, had lots of fun learning through play! 🌿
