A huge congratulations to Gabe on successfully passing his driving test today at Nuneaton! 👏👏

Another fantastic achievement and a very well-deserved result following all the hard work, commitment and progress made throughout his driver training journey.

At County Driving Academy, our lessons are built around a structured, client-centred approach to learning. We recognise that every pupil is different, which means their training should be too.

Millions of British motorists could be driving without valid insurance without realising it.

New research found that 4.5 million drivers have used a car they do not own without checking whether they were covered.

The findings from temporary insurance specialist Tempcover highlight how outdated assumptions about motor insurance could be leaving otherwise law-abiding drivers facing fines, penalty points and vehicle seizure.

I didn’t know
A survey of 2,000 motorists found that 44% had borrowed a car they did not own during the past year, with almost a quarter (23%) doing so every week.

Of those borrowing vehicles, 24% said they had set off relying on an assumption that they were insured rather than checking their cover.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that comprehensive insurance automatically allows motorists to drive other cars.

Thirty-seven per cent of those surveyed believed this was the case.

However, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) warns that drivers should not assume they are covered simply because they hold comprehensive insurance.

Some policies may include Driving Other Cars (DOC) cover, but this varies by insurer and is often limited to third-party cover.

The ABI says motorists should check their policy before driving somebody else’s vehicle, rather than relying on assumptions about the level of cover provided.

More than 400 drivers have deliberately entered closed roadwork areas in England this year.

National Highways is warning that motorists attempting to skip queues are putting roadworkers and fellow drivers at serious risk.

Ignoring temporary signs can endanger motorists and workers and mislead other motorists.

Is it safe?
The latest figures from National Highways show that 814 incursions, where vehicles enter restricted roadwork areas without authorisation, were recorded on England’s motorways and major A roads between January and July 2026.

More than half, 53%, involved drivers deliberately attempting to avoid queues, closures or diversion routes.

That compares with 47% of incursions attributed to this behaviour in 2020, suggesting that the temptation to bypass traffic management is becoming an increasingly significant problem.

National Highways says around 30 incursions are being recorded every week, although incidents can also involve breakdowns, emergency vehicles or drivers entering work areas unintentionally.

The concern is not simply that motorists are breaking temporary restrictions, but that this can place workers in the direct path of moving traffic, while road layouts may contain unfinished surfaces, exposed construction areas, plant, and other hazards that are not designed for normal traffic.

Melanie Clarke OBE, National Highways’ Director of Health, Safety and Wellbeing, said the figures showed a worrying number of drivers “wilfully ignoring roadworks to save time”.

She has also stressed that drivers should not assume a closed section is safe simply because they cannot see workers.

“If you don’t see people working, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t people working nearby,” Clarke said. She added that the road surface could have been compromised during the works, making it unsafe for vehicles to use.

More than one in three young people aged 17 to 29 killed in car crashes were not wearing a seatbelt.

New analysis from the AA Charitable Trust for Road Safety & Environment reveals the continuing failure of seat belt campaigns to get through.

It also raises the issue of young drivers’ and passengers’ problem attitudes to road safety.

They won’t belt up
The AA Charitable Trust’s analysis of Department for Transport data covering 2021 to 2025 found that 35.6% of car occupants aged 17–29 who were killed were not wearing a seatbelt.

That compares with 24.6% of car occupant fatalities across all age groups, which means the proportion among younger people was around 45% higher.

The figures come as the AA Charitable Trust prepares the next phase of its campaign, targeting young drivers and passengers, particularly young men.

Edmund King OBE, Director of The AA Charitable Trust for Road Safety, said the figures were “shocking”.

“More than one in three young people killed in cars were not wearing a seatbelt,” he said. “Behind every statistic is a life cut short, and families and friends left devastated. Yet in a crash you are twice as likely to die if you don’t wear a seatbelt.”

He added: “Seatbelts are the simplest and most effective safety measure. Clicking one into place takes seconds, yet too many young drivers and passengers are still taking unnecessary and fatal risks.”

Drilling down
The RAC says the average price of unleaded petrol has risen by 5p a litre in just one week to 167.17p, while diesel has increased by the same amount to 188.63p.

The latest rises mean filling a typical family car costs around £2.75 more than it did just a week earlier.

These increases have followed a sharp rise in crude oil prices, with the price of a barrel averaging around $96 over the past week.

Brent crude subsequently climbed above $100 on Wednesday as attacks on shipping and energy infrastructure intensified after the US attacked Iranian tankers, and Iran retaliated.

The conflict has raised fears about further disruption to supplies passing through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil transit routes.

Reuters reported that traffic through the strait has fallen sharply following attacks involving the US and Iran, while uncertainty over how much oil is being transported has added a further risk premium to prices.

Fuelling costs
Higher crude prices feed into wholesale petrol and diesel costs, which are then reflected at forecourts.

However, motorists also pay significant tax on every litre purchased.

Fuel duty on petrol and diesel is currently 52.95p a litre, while VAT at 20% is also charged on fuel, including on the duty element.

RAC senior policy officer Rod Dennis said the latest increases demonstrated how vulnerable British motorists were to international events.

“The latest price rises throw into sharp focus just how exposed UK drivers can be to events thousands of miles away,” he said.

Dennis added that there was now a “very strong case” for keeping fuel duty at its current level until at least the end of the Parliament, warning that households were already facing cost-of-living pressures.

Registering change
The new National Roads Policing Coordination Centre (NRPCC) will bring police forces across England together to share intelligence, technology and data, with illegal number plates among its priorities.

It’s an initiative intended to make it harder for drivers to evade speeding, parking and clean-air-zone penalties, but also to prevent criminals using vehicles that police cameras cannot easily identify.

The DfT says illegal plates are increasingly being used to frustrate automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) systems.

These include cloned registrations, where a vehicle is given the registration of another legitimate car, and so-called ‘ghost’ or ‘stealth’ plates designed to make characters difficult or impossible for cameras to read.

Main course
The scale of the problem is difficult to quantify because the Government does not routinely collect figures showing how many illegal plates are in use.

However, DVLA figures highlight the impact of number plate cloning on innocent motorists.

In 2024, the DVLA received 10,461 reports from members of the public who had received correspondence, fines or penalties relating to vehicles they did not recognise or accept responsibility for.

That compared with 7,377 reports in 2020, representing an increase of more than 40%.

There were a further 9,385 reports in the first 10 months of 2025.

The Government cautions that not all of these cases necessarily involve cloning, as some may result from administrative errors.

Positive results
Figures covering April 2025 to March 2026 show that 1,000,043 candidates passed their practical test, compared with 998,578 who failed, resulting in an overall pass rate just above 50%.

That compares with an average pass rate of 45%-47% in recent decades.

The increase comes alongside record levels of testing, with the DVSA conducting approximately 2.169 million car practical tests during 2025/26, compared with 1.96 million the previous year.

That is around 200,000 more tests and comfortably above its target of 1.975 million.

However, the increase in supply has barely shifted the backlog.

Queueing up
The DVSA’s official annual report records a national waiting-time figure of 21.5 weeks in March 2026, only marginally better than 21.9 weeks the previous year.

Its target remains seven weeks; however, its latest accounts now state that “no date set” to achieve it.

The DVSA says the fundamental problem is that demand remains higher than capacity and is difficult to predict.

It estimates that another 450,000 to 500,000 tests above normal capacity are needed to return waiting times to target levels, representing a backlog that could take another 18 months to work through.

Examiner numbers have also increased.

The active car driving examiner workforce reached approximately 1,604 full-time equivalents in March 2026, a 7% increase year-on-year and the highest level since 2018.

The DVSA has also introduced incentives to encourage additional testing and improve retention, while using qualified Ministry of Defence examiners to provide extra capacity.
