As the heat warning has now progressed to a Red Alert for our area and knowing that some local schools have now reduced to half days for tomorrow, Wed and Thurs please read below:

- If you choose not to send your child to Preschool this week during the heatwave please ensure that you let us know. We shall follow up and contact if we do not hear from families and your child is not at Preschool.

- If you would like your child to only do half day sessions, absolutely no problem at all (just let us know).

- Tiny Tekkers is cancelled for this week.

- Children are having minimal time outside (in the mornings and keeping in the shade). We have large industrial fans in place inside which are helping to keep the heat down as much as we can in the Preschool room.

- We are ensuring children are drinking water regularly and we have ice pops in the afternoon.

Wednesday: We are meeting at the Playground at 9am for our Fire Service visit (not normal drop off at Preschool that morning). If you want your child to take part in this and then go home, absolutely no problem at all.

If we feel a child is struggling with the heat when with us we shall contact parents/carers to discuss what you would like to do.

If we feel that is no longer suitable to remain open, despite our best efforts, we shall close early on the next 3 days to reduce impact of the heat on our children and staff and to maintain everyone's health and wellbeing.

Thank you for your support with this matter,
Vix.

This week some of our learning activities have involved celebrating differences. These differences have included:

- How we all look different.
- Our different likes and dislikes.
- Tasting food from different countries.
- Our different families.
- Difference as babies.
- Self portaits.
- Exploring differences with Barbies, dolls and Mr Potato Head toys.
- Speaking different languages (for example how we say 'Hello' in different ways depending on which country we are in).

We have explored lots of books together around this team too. Overall we have all agreed that being different is a good thing and something which we should respect and celebrate together. Well done to all the children on their observations and comments this week - very proud of them! Vix :)

With another Heatwave soon upon us please ensure the following for your child's sessions:

- To come to Preschool wearing sun cream already (if you would like more applied during the day please supply this in your child's bag and let us know on the day).

- For your child to have a sun hat with them.

- Please ensure children come wearing cool clothes and please supply changes of clothes as we shall no doubt have water play on offer to help cool off a bit.

- Please ensure your child is not wearing a vest top, strappy dress or similar (so that their shoulders are covered in the sun).

We shall be keeping children as cool as possible throughout their sessions and will have the big fans on inside to help with this. (Hoping we have some ice pops too!)

We may limit time outside in the heat and also shall ensure of course that children are drinking plenty of water throughout the day.

A huge thank you to everyone who sent in objects this week beginning with 's' - we had a great variety!

We shared the objects altogether and practiced saying the long sound of 's' - this means that this sound is one that is stretched out rather than short and sharp. And we talked about how it can join hands with other sounds to make new sounds (watch Alphablocks on Cbeebies for more examples of this). We focused on the initial sounds and practiced reinforcing that sound before saying the rest of the word.

Next week's SOUND OF THE WEEK IS 'a'.

So objects beginning with 'a', such as:

- apple
- alligator
- ant
- avocado
- arrow
- ambulance
- astronaut
- apricot
- angry
- axe
- anchor

Thank you for supporting us with this - the children are really enjoying it and it's great preparation for our Rising 5s for their new Phonics learning once at school.

- Small world play with pirate ships.
- Various different sensory and messy play trays themed around treasure and pirates.
- Pirate and Princess fancy dress.
- Pirate and Princess cupcakes.
- Pirate and Princess puzzles.

Phew! A very busy week!

- Making food collages.
- Making fruits on the craft table.
- Keeping active with Tiny Tekkers, on the trikes and on the obstacle equipment.

22nd May 2026 - a rather hot but once again fabulous Newick Preschool Sports Day!

The start of the heat wave saw the children taking on obstacle courses, football shoot outs, javelin throwing, hurdles, egg & spoon races, ball & scoop races, bean bag races, balance bikes and more! Of course finished off with running races (children, parents and grandparents races = the utmost respect to all the grandparents who took to the running track in the heat!)

Another amazing turn out to support the children in the organised chaotic fun!

A huge thank you everyone who came along!

Much love, the Preschool team. 💕
