"It was a great, insightful planning session and really generated a spark of excitement for our next term's topic and I can't wait to watch it unfold for the children.

Thank you for your advice, expertise and knowledge and for taking the time to put together a clear and concise medium term plan both of which are greatly appreciated." Kate Mulley (Prep Teacher, Maths Curriculum Leader)

Primary Matters had great supported planning sessions with each phase at Radnor House Prep School. We took relevant fiction and non fiction books, artefacts to provoke curiosity in the term's theme and planning ideas that had worked really effectively in other schools.

The combination of what teachers may have included before in a specific theme, and our fresh ideas, led to lively sharing of how the term might flow from one block to another weaving different subjects together where appropriate.

We created 4 wonderful learning adventures full of enrichment, amazing books, enquiry based learning and exciting outcome opportunities:

Just some of the feedback from our recent INSET day at Thomas Arnold Primary School in Dagenham:

Year 6 Teacher - In 30 years of teaching, this is the best training of my career!

Year 2 Teacher - The entire day was thought-provoking - I can not wait for us to make the changes to our approach.

Year 5 Teacher - I feel guilty that older children do not get as many opportunities to be immersed in their learning - I really believe this will be a welcomed changed to me and the class.

Year 3 Teachers - We ended the day feeling inspired; our passion has been reignited! When do we start?

Terina King, Head of school - The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all. To have staff feel inspired and passionate to update the curriculum, that they will be invested in, in September, is amazing!

In a world where we lose about 10 million hectares of forest a year, or 27 soccer fields a minute, does the felling of one tree really matter?

Yes - we think it does!

One particular tree can mean so much to some, yet seem insignificant among the millions of similar trees to others. That doesn't change its worth to the world as a whole, its importance to the environment, its value as a living thing.

We need to teach our children the value of preserving the environment, the understanding of the interconnectivity of life on our world, and to take responsibility for the planet.

Primary Matters develops school curriculums that do exactly that, built upon core values that promote not only knowledge, but understanding. A great school curriculum nurtures academic understanding and moral development.

Let us help you move forward and reinvigorate your curriculum, teaching and school community.

How can I allow children to 'magpie' ideas from each other without them feeling pressure or anxiety?

One easy method, that has proved popular with children, is 'gallery'. It is important to establish the 'rules' of gallery before implementing it.

First, explain that the children will tuck chairs away and move silently around their own table, looking at everyone's work so far. Then, on a silent signal from the teacher, they move one table clockwise around the room and do the same, silent observing.

Through repeating this, children get to see all the work of their peers without commenting, pointing or discussing with others. It's really important that those 'rules' are explained and established in advance. Once the class understand the expectations, the teacher simple has to say 'gallery' to instigate this activity.

This works brilliantly in a number of subject areas beyond 'art', and can be used throughout the learning process rather than just at the end.

In future, if you want to vary this technique, you can build in a feedback mechanism if you think it would benefit the children. One suggestion, if children are capable, is anonymous sticky notes with a positive comment.

Of course its always easier to plan for this with a knowledgeable and experienced planning partner - we can help!

What should 'hands up' be used for in the classroom?

TEACHING TIP:
(Use this tip in conjunction with 'Cold Calling')

Once you have established an ethos of 'cold calling' and other methods of gathering children's responses, ensure children understand that when they raise their hand, you will assume they have an idea to contribute, have a question to ask or need some help.

This is a great method to engage children in the learning process, building and processing their ideas. "Great idea - why did you think that? What would the impact of your idea be?"

Pull other, less responsive, children into the discussion too: "Sue - what do you think about his idea? How will that alter the outcome?"

Of course its always easier to plan for this with a knowledgeable and experienced planning partner - we can help!

According to a Schools Week publication, a study has found that half of pupils saw social skills decline during Covid.

The impact of the pandemic impact stretches way beyond the classroom.

Almost half of parents said their children’s social and emotional skills worsened during Covid, prompting warnings the pandemic’s impact on youngsters stretches beyond the classroom.

This finding is one of the results of a study run by the IFS and UCL’s institute of education, which also noted that reception-age pupils were among the worst-affected.
