🌍 This Refugee Week, we're challenging stereotypes and redefining the narrative around refugees.

🧑🏽‍⚕️👩🏾‍🎓🧕🏼🧑🏾‍🏫👨🏽‍💼 Refugees are not defined by the circumstances that forced them to leave their homes. They are professionals, parents, students, entrepreneurs, community leaders, and individuals with skills, knowledge, and experiences that enrich our society.

Building inclusive communities means ensuring people have access to the support, information, and opportunities they need to thrive.

🗣️ Language plays a vital role in this journey.

Our Level 3 Community Interpreting Course (14 week online course) equips multilingual individuals with the skills needed to bridge communication gaps, support vulnerable communities, and create greater access to essential services. For many refugees and ethnic minority community members, community interpreting can also provide a meaningful pathway to employment, empowerment, and active participation in society.

🌈Happy Pride Month 🌈

In the current UK political climate, conversations around LGBTQ+ rights, inclusion, and belonging remain more important than ever.

We recognise that LGBTQ+ experiences are not one-dimensional. Intersectionality matters.

People who are both LGBTQ+ and from ethnic minority communities often face multiple and overlapping barriers that can impact their safety, wellbeing, and access to opportunities.

🗣️ The University of St Andrews Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Postgraduate Research Scholarship is encouraging applications from UK‑domiciled 'Home' fee students from BAME backgrounds, with the aim of widening access to doctoral study and promoting greater representation in postgraduate research.

🌍 Today, on World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, we remind everyone that creating spaces where people from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds can come together, is essential for building stronger and more inclusive society.

At DRI, we are seeking support and funding opportunities to revive the Eastbourne Cultural Involvement Group (ECIG) - a vital space for our town's culturally and ethnically diverse communities to connect, share lived experiences, and make Eastbourne a better place for everyone.

📢Sussex Care Sector: How have recent visa changes affected you?

👉 We are inviting both Care Providers (Care Homes, Agencies, & Domiciliary Care) and International Care Workers across Sussex to take part in an important regional study.

❓ Why: To understand how recent migration policy changes are impacting the local workforce, helping us shape future regional funding and policy support.

❓ When & Where: At your convenience. Interviews and chats can be done via a short phone/video call or over email.

🔒 Privacy & Thanks: Care worker interviews are strictly confidential and anonymised, and participants will receive a grocery voucher to thank them for their time.

🗣️ Thank you The East Sussex Mental Health Connection Fund for funding towards DRI’s Walking Roots project!

👉 The programme will deliver seven inclusive 3–4km walks within the High Weald National Landscape 🌿

👉 The programme supports ethnically diverse women who may experience barriers to accessing nature. Walks will be co-led by trained DRI walking leaders and a representative from Rainbow CommUnity CIC, who specialise in group work that builds supportive relationships and belonging in nature to reduce isolation 🚶🏻‍♀️🚶🏽‍♂️🚶🏿‍♀️

This funding strengthens the programme’s long-term viability by embedding lived expertise into its evaluation, fostering deep community trust through inclusive outreach, and securing the essential insurance required for future delivery 🥂

👩🏻‍⚕️👩🏾‍⚕️🧑🏽‍⚕️ In NHS England, around 30% of nurses are non-British nationals, with a high reliance on international recruitment, particularly from India, the Philippines, and Nigeria (UK Parliament, 2025).

💙 On International Nurses Day we are reminded that our healthcare system relies on migrants, whose skills, care, and dedication are essential to supporting communities across the UK.

At Diversity Resource International, we are proud to be working in partnership with Partners in Care - East Sussex and Brighton & Hove on a research project exploring the impact of changes to immigration rules for sponsored carers.

Through this work, we aim to:
👉 Understand the real-life impact of these policy changes
👉 Identify gaps in support, safeguarding, and services

✨ As we celebrate nurses today, we also recognise the importance of protecting, supporting, and valuing the international workforce that helps sustain our health and social care sectors.

💚 This Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re proud to share the completion of the evaluation of the Friendship Bench Sussex Pilot 2025

👉 an important step in developing community-led mental health support for migrant, refugee and asylum-seeking communities across Sussex.

Nine community mental health lay workers were trained, with 53 registrations and 12 participants receiving 1:1 support in trusted community spaces such as Jubilee Library, Eastbourne Library and the DRI office.

🤝 DRI worked with Brighton and Sussex Medical School to deliver culturally responsive mental health support for migrant, refugee, and asylum-seeking communities in Brighton, Eastbourne and Lewes.

Today, we call on partners, funders, and advocates to recognise the value of community-led mental health initiatives and support the Friendship Bench project in Sussex 📣
