Join an online English Book Club School course to develop your English in a lively online book group From Upper Intermediate (B2) to High Advanced (C2).

Join an online English book club course to practise your English once a week on Zoom and develop your spoken accuracy and fluency. Write a weekly summary to develop your grammar and vocabulary. Listen to the author or critics and develop your comprehension, and gain cultural knowledge of the characters, location, time and place. Use and improve your English while learning something new, interesting and valuable. Book Club School is a unique mix between a book club and a language class. You learn something new about the books and authors, and as you discuss what you have read with others, I give feedback on your English to help you develop. It's fun, lively, and a great way to use and improve your English while meeting international people in English. The online book club normally lasts for 7 weeks and we usually read one book in this time. During the week you read the set chapters. If you like you can write a summary of this part of the book and I correct it. Then we discuss this part of the book over Zoom once a week - a maximum of 8 participants in each online book club. There is a choice of book clubs - romances, thrillers, murder mystery, historical dramas or classics. This means that you are in a group with people who share your interests. My students like this way of learning - see my reviews on Facebook. I currently have students from Switzerland, Germany, Argentina, Brazil, France, Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Japan and Italy. This online book club is populated by some interesting, friendly people with an upper-intermediate or advanced level of English. There's a wide range of ages from 20s to 60s - people choose Book Club School to use English in an engaging, enjoyable way while doing something they love.

Written by thriller writer Lucy Foley, Murder at The Grand Alpine Hotel has all of the hallmarks that you would expect from Agatha Christie: a luxurious location, multiple suspects, twists and turns in the plot, and murder...

Whodunnit? Is it the famous actress, the ambitious politician, the unknowable political wife, the dangerous friend, or the clever doctor? Come and join us to find out.

"This precious stone set in a silver sea" Shakespeare's Richard III. The garden of Anne Hathaway's cottage outside Stratford-upon-Avon is very beautiful. This sculpture is captivating as it shows The British Isles, and nature! Can you find the Outer Hebrides, where John of Jon is set? (Answer: top left!)

Anne Hathaway's house is the setting for Hamnet, Maggie O'Farrell's modern classic, in which she imagines the Shakespeare children and family. It's a very atmospheric place - have you visited ?

John of John is the story of a son coming home to the island where he grew up, to his father and the community on the isle of Harris in the Scottish Outer Hebrides. He's been away at art school studying textiles, and although he has changed, everything else is the same. John, his father, is still weaving, farming sheep, and centrally involved in the local Presbyterian church. His Glaswegian grandmother Ella, is still a supportive, comforting presence.

Father and son struggle to connect. Cal is gay and looking for love. John is shocked by Cal's appearance and attitudes. The novel examines the bonds between the men, the generational gap between them, and whether they can be truly honest with each other.

This book is shortlisted for the Booker Prize 2026. Douglas Stuart won the award for Shuggie Bain.

Happy World Teacher’s Day which takes place on Monday 5 October! It celebrates the amazing role that teachers play all over the world and their important contribution to society. This year it marks the 60th anniversary of the 1966 Recommendations on the Status of Teachers by UNESCO. This ensures the standards, rights, and responsibilities for teachers across the world, on matters such as employment, working conditions, training, and continuing education.

These books shown are great supports to English language teachers. Psychology for Language Teachers is a must read book. I used to work with Marion Williams and she was a great source of help to me. And Teaching Unplugged is a bible for those looking to teach without using published materials. One of my earliest in-work training sessions was with the co-author Scott Thornbury on teaching vocabulary. Highly useful and highly memorable.

Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head by the Taliban while returning home from school. She had been a campaigner for the rights of girls to receive an education, and consequently she was targetted. Incredibly, she survived, and was flown to the UK to continue her recovery. Her remarkable story is told in this biography written with Christina Lamb, a Sunday Times journalist. Malala was co-awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014, the youngest ever recipient of the award.

On Thursday in the Conversation Club we are discussing her life and amazing work and what brought her to the attention of the Taliban.

I went to an amazing place recently - Eltham Palace in south London. It was a royal palace - 👑Henry VIII grew up there, but now all that remains is the medieval great hall. In the 1930s it was turned into a modernist house by the Courtaulds - members of a rich family who commercialised "rayon" - a modern artificial fabric. The house is incredible - a beautiful Art Deco entrance room and Art Deco features throughout, including built in bookshelves and reading nooks! 📚📖📚

It was great to be in Canterbury recently. Canterbury is the end of the Via Francigena - the pilgrim route from/to Rome. It is home to two incredible churches - Canterbury Cathedral, of course (pictured), but also St Martin's - the oldest church in the English speaking world that is still in use as a church. St Martin's was used by Queen Bertha as a Christian church before St Augustine came from Rome to spread Christianity to England in 597AD. In the cathedral there was a great modern art exhibition - see the image of The Prodigal Son.
