September Open Evening Audition - 8pm in the Letchworth Settlement Hall on Wednesday 8th July.

A great chance to take part in something without all the commitment of a full length play. Rehearsals will be over the summer, but not too intensive. Performance date is Saturday 5th Sept. Dress/Tech likely to be Wednesday 2nd September.

Present Slaughter by Jane Dewey. Director Barry Woolhead.

An am dram company put on a play in the style of Noel Coward. In the course of the performance the leading man knocks over a table of glasses and cuts his arm. He's determined to battle on but things become increasingly chaotic.

Comedy sketch for a damsel in distress, two would-be rescuers, a horse and a dragon.

Monday and Wednesday evenings
Sunday afternoons with some evenings if hall not available in the afternoon

Read through 6 July, then we will break for the summer and start rehearsing properly from 7 September 2026

At the audition we will ask for any dates you are unavailable but apart from those, because of the nature of the show, all cast will be required at all rehearsals.

Cast

There are 58 named characters!

We are hoping to cast approx. 13 actors, all of which (apart from Scrooge) will play multiple roles - largely ignoring age and gender - and be involved in the action throughout. If you are not playing a character in a scene you will be ensemble or moving props or furniture etc. There will also be some choreographed movement, plus a couple of simple group dances and carol singing.

We will be asking people to read for the following roles, whilst sharing out the other parts in those scenes, plus we have scenes for some of the supporting characters. This should allow us to see what everyone can do and allocate all roles appropriately.

Ebenezer Scrooge - male, late 50s/early 60s, miserly, miserable and unfeeling but finds redemption after being shown his past, present and potential future. Has to demonstrate a range of complex emotions and does not leave the stage throughout the show.

Jacob Marley - male, appears briefly alive (similar age to Scrooge) but then as his ghost, a wretched, tortured soul, wrapped in chains, come to try and save Scrooge from the same fate.

Narrator - an older man who is sat telling Scrooge’s story but in quite a heartfelt way, as we later find he is emotionally invested in it.

Bob Cratchit - late 30s/early 40s, terribly poor and mistreated by his employer but with a large, loving family, he is very grateful for the little he does have. There is a heart breaking scene where he breaks down after the death of his son.

Mrs Cratchit - Bob’s wife and mother of five, strong and not as forgiving as her husband, puts her family first, desperate to ensure Christmas dinner is a success and delighted when it is.

Fred - mid 20s/early 30s, Scrooge’s nephew but the exact opposite of him, energetic, full of joy, positivity and a lust for life.

The Ghost of Christmas Past - male or female - dressed all in white and flickering like a candle, a gentle, soft spoken spirit whose appearance and movement needs to represent the changing nature of memory (always with the risk of having its light extinguished as people like Scrooge try and suppress their memories).

The Ghost of Christmas Present - male or female, larger than life, a jolly giant, the personification of the Christmas Spirit, spreading Christmas cheer and good will. But ending with a fierce criticism as the children of Ignorance and Want are revealed beneath their robes.

Stage Manager and Backstage Team

This is an ambitious production with actors and scenes constantly changing and lots of costume, props, effects, sound and lighting, so we will need a crack team behind the scenes. Please email [email protected] if you want to be involved - it should be a really fun show!
