📚 New blog post!

I’ve been tutoring for almost two years now, and what started as a way to make a bit of extra money alongside university has somehow turned into a little business of its own.

I definitely thought setting it up would be simpler than it was 😅

From getting my first student and figuring out what to charge, to building a website, managing bookings and automating all the boring admin — I’ve learned quite a lot by getting things wrong and figuring them out as I go.

So I’ve written about it!

What I Learned Setting Up My Tutoring Business

I’ve shared some of the biggest lessons I’ve learned so far, including finding students, pricing my lessons, managing demand, balancing tutoring with university, and what I wish I’d known when I started.

Still very much learning as I go, but hopefully it’s useful (or at least interesting!) to someone 😊

When I started tutoring, I thought it would be fairly simple. Someone would book a lesson, I would help them with maths or physics for an hour, and I would make a bit of extra money to help me thro…

☀️ New blog post!

With tonight’s solar eclipse approaching, I started wondering: how can a tiny hole in a piece of cardboard actually produce an image of the Sun?

That question turned into a much bigger mathematical investigation than I expected! I explored how pinhole viewers work, used similar triangles to predict the size of the projected Sun, built Python simulations, and even investigated how diffraction and geometric blur can be used to estimate the best size for the pinhole.

What started with cardboard, paper and a tiny hole ended up involving geometry, proportionality, optimisation and the wave behaviour of light.

🌒 How Can a Tiny Hole Make an Image of the Sun?

My latest post is now live — have a read below! 👇

With all the talk about this solar eclipse happening tonight at 7pm, there is one fairly important rule: don’t look directly at the Sun. But that raises an obvious question—how are you supposed to …

📚 New blog post & tutoring update!

I’ve just published a new blog post: “Things I Didn’t Expect About Studying Maths”.

When I started my maths degree, I expected more challenging calculations. What I didn’t expect was how much my perspective on mathematics would change—from writing proofs and getting comfortable with being stuck, to realising that some of the simplest questions can have the deepest answers.

If you’re considering studying maths at university, or you’re simply curious about what it’s really like, I hope you’ll enjoy giving it a read!

I’ve also reopened my tutoring bookings for the upcoming academic year until the end of August. If you’re looking for support in Maths or Physics, you can now book sessions again. I will be changing my hours once I get my timetable for Uni again next semester.

Im a little bit late to say congrats on finishing all the exams, and I hope everyone managed to do okay! Fingers crossed for the 8th of August. 🤞

As always, thank you to everyone who continues to support my little corner of the internet. It really does mean a lot. 😊

🎉 Exciting news - I’ve launched my blog!

Alongside my tutoring work, I’ve created a safe space to share my journey through school, university, and my path into mathematics as a career.

I’ll be writing about the challenges I’ve faced, lessons I’ve learned, study strategies that helped me succeed, and what it’s really like pursuing maths beyond the classroom.

If you’re a student, interested in mathematics, or simply enjoy personal stories about education and career development, I’d love for you to follow along.

You can find the blog at rhianatutoring.co.uk

Thank you to everyone who has supported me so far. This is just the beginning, and I’m excited to share the journey with you!
