A.S.Neill's Summerhill School

A.S.Neill's Summerhill School This is the official page of A.S.Neill's Summerhill School the world famous free school. Today the school is more popular than ever.

Summerhill – That Dreadful School ( a book of this title was written by the founder, A.S.Neill)! Summerhill School in Suffolk, England is the oldest and probably the best known democratic or ‘free’ school in the world. Founded in 1921 by the late A.S.Neill, Summerhill has survived good times and bad , including a well documented legal case in 2000 at the Royal Courts of Justice in London against t

he British government who were trying to change the school’s philosophy. The government capitulated and the school remains true to its original ideals. The CBBC drama based upon this fight can be seen on AMAZON PRIME, titled: SUMMERHILL. Neill’s books, the best known being “Summerhill”, and the most recent - “Summerhill and A.S. Neill”, have been translated into countless languages and are sold throughout the world. The many thousands of visits to the website by students and departments of education all over the world and people seeking another way of educating children, are hopefully helping to change the old views and encourage new attitudes. The school is particularly pertinent today as recognition of the cost that the continual pressure to succeed is having upon our children is giving more people pause for thought....

The school is currently planning a professional archive to preserve its unique systems for future generations.

We are very happy to say that the Ole Gal has just had the fantastic Nathan Hunt Tree Services carry out some essential maintenance on her after dropping a huge branch that was over 18m long and an estimated 8-10 tons in weight 😳

The guys trimmed up the canopy to reduce the overall load taken by the branches but were careful not to remove too much as it will take time for the tree to adjust to her new trim. They also highlighted that we are in the middle of a very hot period with very little rain so were mindful of that too.

On the plus side, Nathan reported that he was really impressed with the overall health of the BB and was surprised to see that she had around 30cm of fresh growth this year, and considering her age and the hot summer/drought we are experiencing this is very impressive indeed…

In summary it looks like she’ll be around for many years to come! ❤️🌳❤️

Learning at Summerhill 📝

It is a common misconception that Summerhill School (often dubbed “the do as you like school”) is NOT a strong academic establishment, but this can’t be further from the truth.
Yes, at Summerhill, the children choose whether to engage in academics and attend their lessons, but this very approach instils in our children an incredibly grounded and mature relationship to their learning.
The school has a dedicated and very experienced group of teaching staff, and a full and diverse curriculum for the students to choose from – subjects include Maths, English, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, History, Fashion and Textiles, Fine Art, Woodwork, Metalwork (including blacksmithing and bladesmithing), Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Chinese, Computer Science, Digital Composition, Sound Engineering and a wide range of musical instruments.
The very fact that children have the complete freedom to choose what they want to dip into, or to study longer term, gives them a healthy relationship and a deep ownership of their learning from a young age, and therefore a strong foundation for them to build on for whatever their chosen path may be in the future… 📖☀️

Our Big Beech has dropped a large branch this week. A sad moment, but she’s a wise old girl so probably has her reasons! The Big Beech is such a special part of Summerhill – pupils of all generations will have memories of this beautiful tree. 🌳

Shedding limbs is part of a tree’s aging, and can be caused by Summer Branch Drop in hot weather.

The Summerhill woodwork will be grateful for the donation… 🪵🔨

See last photo for the Big Beech in her prime ❤️

With hundreds of schools across the UK closing due to the heatwave and thousands of kids trapped in hot classrooms across the nation, Summerhill has thought long and hard and, after much careful deliberation, we’ve decided to stay open and enjoy the Summer weather just as we always have. We never did tend to follow the herd after all. 😎☀️

Lovely to have the summer term underway! ☀️
Exam season is ongoing so it’s a busy time, but not too busy to enjoy the sunshine – between exams, lessons and school meetings, pupils have been skating, cycling, reading in the sun, taking trips to the beach… just enjoying themselves and making fond memories 🌊

We’re looking forward to our half term celebrations in a couple of weeks, and it won’t be long until the pool opens 🏊🧡
