We had a lovely maths session today exploring the numbers 6, 7 and 8 🧠✨

We sorted & looked at different representations, built, counted, compared, explored one more and one less, and talked about how numbers are made! We used practical resources to really understand what each number looks and feels like. So much brilliant thinking and explaining from Leo today 💛

These early number foundations make such a difference to confidence later on!

✨ Happy New Year from Rouse Tuition ✨

I hope all of my families had a really lovely Christmas break and were able to enjoy some rest and time together.

I’m so looking forward to welcoming the children back and continuing our learning this term. It has been wonderful seeing their confidence grow and the progress they’re making, and I’m excited to build on that over the coming months.

For those who like to have dates to hand, here are the remaining term breaks for the year:
📅 Half term: w/c 16th February
📅 Easter break: w/c 30th March, returning w/c 13th April
📅 Half term: w/c 25th May, returning w/c 1st June
📅 Summer break begins: w/c 13th July
There will be no sessions running during these weeks unless stated otherwise.

Sometimes with writing, it’s all about finding a way in.
That moment when excitement is ignited and the ideas start to flow.

One of my lovely learners is a reluctant writer, but an enthusiastic, capable, voracious reader. Her head is full of imagination, language, and incredible vocabulary… she just needed a meaningful way to get all of that out and onto paper.

And that’s exactly where 1:1 tuition is such a privilege.
It gives us the space to truly know our learners and what lights them up, what they care about, and what will unlock their confidence. And for her, the key was dragons.

I introduced her to Dragonology which is the most beautiful book. It is packed with rich vocabulary, artefacts, diagrams, mysteries, puzzles and facts about different dragons and she absolutely loved it.

From there, we built a writing journey that felt exciting, achievable, and personal:

🔥 We began by pulling out words and phrases from the book that we enjoyed.
🔥 We described a dragon she already knew well, working together to build detail
🔥 Created a word bank about its appearance, personality, movements, strengths
🔥 Practised our sentences orally first, editing, improving, experimenting
🔥 And only then did we write… with confidence and purpose

The next session, she was given a dragon’s egg and asked to imagine the baby dragon inside. We thought about what the dragon would be like and from that we built another word bank together, exploring details, imagining behaviours, using ambitious vocabulary, and this time I supported her with gentle sentence starters to help her build momentum.

The results were wonderful and completely different from what we get when a child is asked to write something they don’t care about.

This is the magic of personalised learning:
when the work is tailored, meaningful, and rooted in a child’s own passions, the breakthroughs are incredible to witness.

Finding the way in is everything, and 1:1 tuition gives us the time, the space, and the freedom to do exactly that.

My learner and I took our counting work even further by diving into arrays - and it opened up such a rich world of maths learning just using counters and a whiteboard!

Over the last few weeks we’ve been strengthening her confidence with counting in steps, understanding equal groups, and beginning to see how numbers can be built in different ways. Today, we brought all of that together using counters to build visual arrays on the table.

From each array, Luna was able to build her own repeated addition sentences (like 3 + 3 + 3 = 9), and then see how these link directly to multiplication (3 × 3 = 9). We also explored commutativity - turning the array around to show that 3 × 4 and 4 × 3 still make the same total.

It’s such a powerful way to make abstract ideas feel real and concrete. Using hands-on resources gives children the chance to see the structure of numbers, not just memorise facts. I’m so proud of how bravely she’s thinking and experimenting with different representations - her number confidence is growing every week. 💛

November is coming to a close... And we know what that means 🎅

This month we learned all about fireworks night & why it's celebrated. We created our own fireworks and thought of words to describe them using all of our senses. Some of us wrote a senses poem and some of us linked our phonics to fireworks! We introduced the sounds "ar" and 'ir" and thoughts about words to describe them. We also got the glitter out for fireworks maths 😅😂

Number cards might look simple, but they’re one of the most powerful tools for building early maths skills and having fun along the way!

There's so much you can do with just a set of number cards!
🔢 Order numbers forwards and backwards
🎲 Spot the missing number in a sequence
🌈 Sort into patterns (odd/even, 2s, 5s, 10s)
🧩 Make connections (5 is half of 10, 2 more than 3, 1 less than 6…)
🔎 Pattern spotting to help with making those links
👀 Play fun games like the number thief and guessing which card has disappeared
🐊 Develop place value security with things like turning over 2 cards and saying which is greater or less than, or turning over one and telling me the number before and after, or just everything you know about that number.
🧮 Counting in 2s, 5s, 10s, 3s etc
📏 Make a sequence and the learner has to work out the rule

And so, so much more.

The are simple, hands-on, and easy to make at home and adapt to your child’s level and your current focus. Number cards bring maths to life, turning abstract concepts into something concrete and playful.

Scrambled sentences are such a fun and easy way to learn more about sentence structure and they naturally bring about so much discussion. The learning from it in our session was so rich!

We talked about the use of capital letters and punctuation, we played with adjectives to improve them and chatted about word classes, and we learned more about conjunctions and their role of joining ideas together or adding more information. We thought about tricky words and discussed tactics of remembering how to spell those words too.

They also allow an opportunity to practise writing with much reduced pressure, giving the children chance to enjoy the process and grow in confidence.

Had some really lovely sessions today - I honestly feel so lucky to be a tutor, it's such an privilege to teach 1:1, at their pace, in their own way and all whilst wearing slippers in my own home 🤣

Here my little learner and I explored place value using dinosaurs 🦖 and a tens frame to help visualise tens and ones. This concrete, playful approach builds strong number sense and confidence.

We also did some phonics practice, shaping tricky sounds with playdoh before popping them into CVC words and using our phonics knowledge to sound out and blend the words together. That's where the magic happens 🌟 the first sounds children need to be really confident and secure on are s, a, t, p, i, n. From there, they can read! And the satisfaction that brings is wonderful to see. Teaching early ready is amazing.

We also wrote short captions for pictures, we sorted numbers into the correct order and spotted which were missing when the robber came along to take one, along with many other things! A busy, fun session!

What a wonderful first day at Rouse Tuition!

I cannot tell you how good it felt to have my little learners in today for our very first sessions! We got stuck right in, started building those all-important relationships, and explored their strengths while spotting where I can add value to their learning journey - my most favourite thing.

Teaching has always been my ultimate passion, and I’ve missed it so much. Unlocking learning, noticing patterns, and laying those blocks of progress step by step. What a privilege!

I've already had some wonderful feedback and I’m already so excited to pick up where we left off in our next sessions!
