Parents of lovely year one children - this may be just right for you!

I have changed the tittle of the course as we do very much look at applying our sounds in reading AND WRITING.

It is also be suitable for year two children who are still practising writing in sentences that are readable and make sense.

Found this in my new book ‘5 Minute Mum’ by Daisy Upton.
Lovely activity that I have done in the past in school. Lots of my children are familiarising themselves with ‘words’ (rather than over-sounding). Perhaps they could try this with the words they are working on at the minute?

This is Matilda, 4 years old and visually impaired. Matilda’s enjoying the picture book ‘What the Ladybird Heard’, thanks to the amazing charity called Living Paintings. They’ve added beautiful hand painted feely pictures of the ladybird and farm animals, the story is in braille and I lent my voice to the audio soundtrack....which guides little fingers over the feely pictures and describes the funny farmyard illustrations by Lydia Monks.

Living Paintings makes sure blind children don’t miss out on magical reading experiences. Their free postal library is fully-operational, despite these difficult times, so that blind children in the UK can keep reading, learning and discovering. The Touch to See version of ‘What the Ladybird Heard’ is out now and only available from Living Paintings FREE postal library for blind and partially sighted children. As we can come to the end of a very strange term, I am delighted that ALL of the children that I have worked with have made HUGE amounts of progress. Considering all that’s been happening for them, that’s a real win and I know that they are all very proud of themselves.

Though it’s challenging to plan at the moment, I am looking at the possibility of starting up some small group sessions next term. These would be shorter sessions a couple of times a week. As always, carefully tailored to the children’s levels with the primary aim of building self esteem. These will be perfect for children in years 2 and 3.

Little packs of practical resources have helped my early readers, writers and mathematicians have a positive return to online tutoring this week.
I didn’t want this lockdown to mean that tutoring was all about screen reading!

Learning spellings in this house, this morning!
“Double the constant and add the Y” has been said at least a billionty times. 🤣
Getting all our jobs done in preparation for a much needed PJ day tomorrow.

Half way through my working week and it’s just so lovely to hear how the children are settling back. Aren’t they so good at adapting?

Lots of reading questions this week so just a few pointers:

📚Children should be reading books where they get approx 9/10 words correct. This means they are learning but still have fluency.

📚 I am happy to asses children’s reading ability but most teachers will also be doing this soon. It takes time 1:1, and when we work 1:1 we need to plan carefully for the needs of the other 29. We WILL do that over time but the chances are that the book that came home this week was an educated guess.

📚So... do let teachers know if you think they’ve got it wrong. ‘Super easy. No mistakes! I wonder if we could try a harder book next week?’ or ‘We tried hard with this but name didn’t enjoy it, as it was a very tricky read. We would love an easier book next week.’

📚Little and often at home... this is tricky in my household too! Tips are:
—🖼Pre-tell the story together using pictures- set them up for success by introducing the important language and character names.
—⏱ Timer sometimes works in our house. ‘Just 10 minutes today. How much can we read in 10 minutes?’
—📖Alternating pages - you read one page, they read the next and so on. Then you can model how to sound out words on your page... and support those with a strong sense of justice. ‘It’s not fair that I have to read.’ Well we both are now. 😂
—🗒Post-it’s are my favourite resource! You know that bit where you painfully and slowly read a word and then on the next page they don’t recognise the word that they JUST read. Pop it on a post-it, and encourage them to move it across each page.
—📝Writing massively supports reading. Post its, coloured pens, whiteboards all add to the sense of novelty but fundamentally encourage your child to practice the sounds and shapes in a word that they have found difficult. Just two or three words before or after reading.

📚Hope you have fun! Remember, school book-banded books there for a reason but reading and listening to stories for pleasure is where the real magic happens. If your child is exhausted in their transition back to school, a snuggle with a favourite story could be just the ticket! 👩‍❤️‍👨
