Every day at Excel Care, we see the impact that Alzheimer's and dementia have on the people we support and the families who love them. We witness the confusion, the frustration, and the heartbreak that can come with losing precious memories, but we also see incredible strength, resilience, and love. By donating to our fundraiser, you are helping Alzheimer’s Society continue their vital work in providing support, advice, and ground breaking research for those affected by dementia. No donation is too small – every pound raised brings us one step closer to a future where fewer families have to face this devastating condition alone. Together, we can make a real difference and help memories last. 💙💛

What's on tomorrow at the club!

Many people still think that dementia is just a natural part of ageing, that it’s only forgetting things, and that it’s something that only happens to old people.

But none of that is true.

Dementia is a medical condition caused by different diseases that damage the brain, including Alzheimer’s disease, vascular disease and Lewy body disease.

It has a wide range of symptoms including memory loss, confusion, needing help with daily tasks, problems with language, and changes in behaviour.

These symptoms are progressive, which means they may be relatively mild to begin with, but they get worse over time. Occasional forgetfulness, like misplacing your keys or getting the time wrong for an appointment, is different from dementia.

Dementia affects around a million people in the UK. Over 70,000 people living with dementia are under 65 – this is called young onset dementia.

And importantly, dementia is different for everyone. No two individuals' experience of dementia will be the same. Different types of dementia also tend to affect people differently, especially in the early stages.

What do you wish more people understood about dementia?

A Story of Strength, Love and Determination

Eighteen months ago, one of the people we support was diagnosed with vascular dementia. To her family, she has always been a gentle, caring and independent woman with a wonderful sense of humour. Shy by nature, she has a warmth that draws people in, and everyone who meets her quickly falls in love with her kind spirit.
Throughout her life, she showed remarkable strength. She worked in heavy industry, raised two children as a single parent, and always put the needs of others before her own. Her family describe her as selfless, determined, and fiercely independent.
She has always enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. A good book, a challenging puzzle, knitting, and spending time with loved ones brought her great happiness. While dementia has changed some of the things she is able to do, it has not taken away her love of a day out, a nice lunch, or a slice of cake. She still enjoys visits to gardens, the zoo, and local attractions, making the most of every moment.
Some of her happiest memories are of growing up alongside her seven sisters and later caring for her three grandchildren. Her home was often transformed into a school, library, shop or café as she spent hours playing with them and creating magical childhood memories.
Today, her family are dedicated to supporting her just as she has always supported them. They hope that by sharing her story, more people will understand the impact dementia has on families and the importance of continued research and support. Their message to others facing a diagnosis is simple: continue doing the things you love, cherish the time you have together, focus on the positives, and never be afraid to seek support.
Above all, they want people to know that despite the challenges dementia brings, their mum remains what she has always been — a strong, determined, and deeply loved woman.

Please help us fund the research to make these memories last 💜

Get a free NHS health check at parkrun! 🩺🏃

Local health services will be taking over parkrun next month, with free NHS health checks available to runners and volunteers at Pennington Flash (Saturday 4 July) and Haigh Woodland Park (Saturday 11 July).

If you aren’t already familiar, parkrun is a positive, welcoming and inclusive community that has 5k runs every Saturday morning at 9am all across the world - including Pennington Flash parkrun and Haigh Woodland parkrun.

There’s no time limit and no one finishes last. Run, jog or walk – it doesn’t matter. The focus is on fun and being active.

Next month’s takeover events have been organised by our local Primary Care Networks, with Health First ALW CIC on hand to deliver the health checks to those who want them.

Be Well Wigan will also be there from 8.30am offering health and wellbeing advice.

If you’re new to parkrun, all you need to do is register for a barcode on the official website so you can take part. Link in the comments.

Participants are also asked to wear blue for the takeover events, in tribute to the NHS. 💙
