“What an unbelievable place to train! At 37 and dealing with a dodgy knee which I've had reconstructive surgery on .

I have been finding every excuse under the Sun not to train BJJ.I spoke to Dave and he put my mind at ease and invited me along to a session.

From the moment entered the gym, I was hooked. All of the nerves and self doubt were quickly put to one side with how welcoming everyone was and how clear and well structured the sessions are.

I'm learning every session and enjoying the process of learning something completely new.

I cannot recommend this enough for both the physical benefits but more importantly the benefits to my mental strength of building resilience by putting yourself in uncomfortable situations.

If you are hesitant, nervous or worried - embrace it and get onto the mats. It will genuinely change the course of your life.”

We all have busy lives.

The thing is.

If you don’t plan in activities that are important to you.

Life will fill your schedule regardless.

More often than not.

With the things that do not excite you.

Plan in the time for training.

Plan in the weekends away.

If you’re anything like me if you don’t plan it or schedule it.

It won’t happen.

If you were waiting for kids to go back to school.

You’ll now be waiting for the routine to settle down abit.

It’ll be half term again soon.

Then

“Wind down for Xmas”

“I’ll start in New year.”

Then we’re having this conversation again.

The only way to break it.

Actually put it in the diary.

Not “when things settle down.”

This week.

Another common reason people don’t come to their first Jiu Jitsu class is this:

“I don’t want to be a burden.”
“I’ll just slow everyone else down.”
“I don’t want to hold people up.”

sound familiar?

well guess what.

Every single person who started was a complete beginner.

No body walks in knowing what they’re doing.
No body walks in knowing the moves.

In fact do you know does happen when a new person starts.

People will introduce themselves to you.

They will help you out.

You are not a burden.
You’re an opportunity for people to pass knowledge onto.
Everyone remembers being in your position.

If the fear of holding people back has stopped you then get rid of that limiting belief.

I'll be completely honest theres been times this year I'd started to lose focus a bit.

Getting bored.
Just going through the motions.

And I know I'm not the only one who's felt like that.

Hitting a plateau.
Low motivation.
Not enjoying it as much as you used to.

When you do anything for long enough, it's natural to feel this way.

The key is knowing it comes in waves and cycles.

So what did I do?

I dropped into another gym.
Booked a competiton abroad.
Rolled with new people.
I booked a seminar in to learn some new details.

All these examples helped me get out of the slump

What can you do if you're in the same boat?

✅ Switch up your routine > Gi, NoGi whatever keeps it fresh.
✅ Attend a seminar > New teaching style, different techniques
✅Cross train > find new styles, expose weak spots.
✅ Sign up for a comp > give yourself a reason to push.
✅ Be intentional > stop trying to win every round, start trying to learn.
✅ Address recovery > Are you doing too much for your body to recovery properly. This can lead to burn out.

Let me know which one you've used or if you do anything differently?

Check out this review from one of our members.

“Before joining Spinners BJJ I was in a state of mind in which I felt nervous about going about my day to day and work life due to a lack of me feeling I would be able to defend myself appropriately in a conflict situation.
Since joining Spinners BJJ I have learned a lot of skills and now feel much more confident that I will be able to defend myself.
I would recommend Spinners because the atmosphere and training are amazing. The people who work and train there are great at what they do everyone who goes is very friendly and willing to help if you're struggling on a specific technique. On top of that it's a great place to train overall and you learn a lot by going.” - Andrew

We've had a few new starters over summer.

And I get it.

Jiu Jitsu can seem overwhelming and complex.

Especially if it's brand new, you have no context.

How one position fits into another.

What comes next?

Whats the defence?

There's frustration and confusion.

And thats amazing.

You're experiencing something,

You didn't even know existed a week ago.

Just take 1 or 2 bits of information and try to remember them.

This state happens to us all not just beginners.

We recently had a seminar on a position that few of us has seen before.

We shared the exact same feelings and emotions as a beginner.

And it was great.

We worked opening a closed guard this week.

3 distances.

Stacking into a closed guard.
Posturing up on knees.
Standing up.

This Sau Paulo style of passing is a great option if you like to force chest to chest half guard.

What’s your thoughts on stacking into the closed guard?

Lazy?
Too risky?
Only works for tall people?

I’ve had some great feedback from the seminar we held on Saturday.

Shane is known for his system called “The Fishnet”

He went through the 2 finishes.

Back take
Sweep

And several different entries.

Resulting in the same ending depending on the bait you took.

Back take
Sweep

As a beginner this simple idea will help you progress.

Learn combinations.

Like a boxer would learn a 1, 2 (jab, cross)

A simple example:

Hip bump sweep > Kimura
Cross collar choke > Armlock.

Build combinations.

If none of this makes any sense but you want to have a go.
