One of my favourite things to see in a group is when someone stops apologising for every little mistake. They try. They pause. They find another way to say it. They keep going.
That is a real win.
Confidence does not usually arrive in one big moment. It grows quietly, every time you have a go and realise the world did not end because the sentence was not perfect.

💡I know what it feels like to get stuck mid-sentence. 😉
I have learned languages in different ways over the years, and the biggest lesson has always been the same: speaking takes courage.
Grammar helps, vocabulary helps, but confidence grows when you actually use the language. That is why my groups focus on communication first.

🤔 What do we actually do in a conversation group?🌟
We usually start gently. A short warm-up, a few questions, a topic to guide the conversation, and plenty of time to speak in a relaxed way.
You are never expected to perform. You are just encouraged to take part, at your own pace.

⚽️🎾🚴This is why I do not base my groups on random textbook dialogues. Adults need something real to talk about.
French culture, food, travel, habits, lifestyle, family, opinions, memories, little everyday differences.
When the topic is interesting, people naturally want to join in. And when they want to join in, speaking starts to feel less like a test and more like a conversation.

One of our topics for this week is sports - tennis, football and Tour de France are happening shortly.
Like it or not, we all have opinions to share!

⏳The pause before answering in French is normal. 😉
That little pause when someone asks you a question in French does not mean you cannot speak. It means your brain is working hard.
You are listening, translating, choosing words, checking grammar, worrying about mistakes, and trying to reply all at once.
No wonder it feels slow.
In my conversation groups, we practise getting comfortable with that pause. You do not need to answer instantly. You just need to start trusting yourself to try.

Sunday French culture question 🇫🇷

What is one French social habit that you find fascinating?🫣

The double cheek kiss confusion?
The importance of saying “bonjour” before asking anything?
The very direct opinions?
The way debates can sound like arguments, but apparently aren’t?
The formal “vous” that suddenly becomes “tu”?
The ability to complain beautifully?

I do think French social rules can be both charming and slightly terrifying.

Here's a snapshot from today.

Great team work in pairs or 3 where we played some games to practice the alphabet! Always useful to be able to spell!
Could you spell your name / email address correctly or give your reg-card details?

Alphabet & numbers are everywhere - Walk down your street and have a go at saying the reg numbers in French to see if you can do it!

🤤🤤And can you spot "les canelés de Bordeaux" one of the lovely learner shared with the group? Such a kind gesture and everyone appreciated them!

Not sure if your French is good enough?

That is one of the most common worries people have before joining.
My groups are best for adults who already know some French but feel rusty speaking. You do not need perfect grammar. You do not need to speak quickly. You just need to be willing to have a go.

That is what we practise in my small French conversation groups in Leigh-on-Sea.
