On 27 May 1997, the University of Leicester welcomed two icons for the opening of the Richard Attenborough Centre for the Arts and Disabled People, now known as the Attenborough Arts Centre.
Arriving by helicopter, this moment marked the beginning of a space dedicated to accessibility and creativity - a vision championed by Richard Attenborough himself.
The Attenborough Arts Centre continues to stand as a testament to inclusion and the transformative power of the arts.

There’s a photo in the article taken in 1977 which is exactly as I remember it.
A painting of Claudio Ranieri was attached to the wall of Brucciani's building, in 2016, to celebrate Leicester City's Premier League title!
Leicester's Italian cafe closes after 82 years The Brucciani family have been serving coffee and cakes to the people of Leicester since 1937.

Here's a view along Fox Lane, just off Humberstone Gate, taken on 31st August 1965.
To the right we have the back entrance to Lewis's and to the left the back of Marks & Spencer, which looks like it's in the middle of construction.
A lot of you will remember this branch of Brucciani won't you? Ice cream soda anyone?

There was a Rag Week stunt (1981?) which involved custard pies being thrown at a lecturer. I seem to remember a distinct sense of humour failure and the university being closed for a few days as a result!
to 1991 where we can see students kidnapping the Lord Mayor, Councillor David Taylor, for charity.

to the construction of our Engineering Building and its famous roof 🏗
Officially opened in 1963, our Engineering Building had to be carefully designed to ensure sunlight wouldn't affect delicate equipment. The rippling ‘waves’ of the two large glass roofs, angled at 45 degrees to the towers, face north to provide illumination without direct sunlight.

1980s cars in Leicester. My pride and joy was a metallic green Ford Es**rt Estate…
Fredric Lennard and his five sons Samuel, Thomas, Henry, John and William built up a large shoemaking business in Leicester. In August 1901 they patented the Liberty brand of footwear. Here is their factory that was on Eastern Boulevard with the famous Statue of Liberty replica which was installed after the family took a trip to America after World War II.
We think this photo was taken in the early 1980s looking at the cars - the orange one looks like a Vauxhall Chevette, what do you think?
