People have been asking: “How can I help?”
Current students at UoL have created a petition to send to the exec board to signal our anger at the redundancies announced. If you'd like to sign it as a School of Arts current student/alumni it would be great to show how widespread the support is for our staff! Just add your name (subject and years attended) at the bottom of the list.
Disinvestment petition
January 2021 Dear Executive Board, We are writing to you as students of the School of Arts, to condemn your recent announcement to strategically disinvest. We believe every member of staff at the School is essential and for you to threaten any one of them with redundancy is cruel. In response...
19/01/2021
We have been posting a lot about the disinvestment on our instagram stories, however we have decided to make a main feed post for all of our socials. Currently, the university is undergoing changes which have resulted in staff redundancies, loss of modules and resources for a number of faculties including the:
- School of Arts
- School of Business
- School of informatics
- School of Mathematics and Actuarial Science
- Department of Neuroscience, Psychology and Behaviour
Whist the university has maintained that the disinvestment will not affect our studies, it is by no means less hurtful when we are losing our teaching staff and access to resources (as changes are being made to the library and student services), both of which do have an impact on our academic life. As our Society president Lucy states:
‘Our investment as students, at this university, is being disinvested in. The reasons that led English students (and students of other schools) to choose this University are being ignored. In this ‘strive for excellence’, management are willing to sacrifice the heart of these courses. This isn’t as simple as a disinvestment in one course. This now is just the start of a long term financial plan that will cost the students far more than what the university ‘gains’. The university motto, ut vitamin habeant, (so that they may have life) is parodied by the decision to take away people’s livelihoods.’
Therefore we urge you to email our VC, sign the petitions and support our staff. Let your voices be heard, everyone can make a difference.
