Cumbria Youth Brass Band is back!
The band began its new season with a fantastic first rehearsal in Keswick, welcoming three new players and working with our new Musical Director, Anna Hughes-Williams, for the first time.
Members also began their youth leadership workshops and got stuck into some brilliant new music. A hugely positive start to an exciting season ahead!

Representatives from our seven partner bands came together for the first Participation to Pathways development day, sharing experiences, ideas and the challenges facing training bands. It was a positive day of honest discussion, new connections and practical thinking about how we can create stronger, more sustainable pathways for players across Cumbria.

BANDS WANTED FOR CUMBRIA’S BIG BRASS WEEKEND 2027!
Could your band be part of next year’s Cumbria’s Big Brass Weekend?
We’re already planning for June 2027, and we’re looking for brass bands to come along, make some noise and be part of a brilliant weekend celebrating brass music in Cumbria.
Whether you’re a championship band, a community band, a training band or somewhere in between, we’d love to hear from you. This weekend is all about bringing musicians and audiences together, sharing great music and showing just how vibrant and varied the brass band community can be.

What are we doing for brass bands?

We’re giving more people their first opportunity to pick up an instrument and experience the fun of making music.
Through taster days and have-a-go sessions at community events, we take our colourful plastic brass instruments out into towns and villages across Cumbria. They offer an easy, accessible way for people of all ages to try brass playing—often for the very first time.
We can then help interested players find their nearest community band and discover how they can continue.
Because every lifelong brass player has to start somewhere—and sometimes it begins with one plastic instrument and the confidence to have a go.

Come and have a go at Barrow Brass Fest!
Drum and Brass will be at Barrow Brass Fest with fun, friendly taster workshops where you can pick up an instrument and discover what making music is all about.
No previous experience is needed—just come along, make some noise and see if brass could be for you!
There will also be performances from brass bands and young musicians from across Furness and Cumbria, plus an exhibition celebrating the legendary Vickers Works Band.

NEW SEASON STARTS THIS WEEKEND- SIGN UP NOW

It’s not all about winning—but celebrating a trophy now and then feels pretty good!
Winning trophies isn’t what CYBB is all about. We’re far more interested in helping young musicians grow in confidence, challenge themselves, make friends and enjoy performing together.
But after all that hard work, there’s nothing wrong with celebrating an achievement every now and again!
Competitions give our players an exciting goal to work towards and an opportunity to experience the buzz of performing at their very best. Whatever the result, it’s the teamwork, commitment and progress made along the way that matter most—but we’ll admit, bringing home a little silverware feels pretty good too!

What are we doing for brass bands?
We’re helping bands build strong foundations for the future.
Through Pathways to Participation, we’re working with Brass Bands England to provide governance training and support for participating bands. From good policies and effective committees to developing sustainable ways of working, it’s about giving the people behind our bands the knowledge and confidence they need to thrive.
Because strong brass bands need more than great players — they need strong, supported organisations behind them too.

NEW SEASON STARTS THIS WEEKEND!

There’s nothing like sitting beside an experienced player to inspire you
Some of the best musical learning happens simply by sitting beside someone with more experience.
You hear how they shape a phrase, watch how they approach a difficult passage and discover the little things that can’t always be learned from a tutor book. At CYBB, younger, developing musicians play alongside experienced players who can encourage them, share their knowledge, and help them grow in confidence.
That support works both ways, too. Our Youth Leader Programme gives young people opportunities to develop their own leadership skills, support others and put what they learn into practice during CYBB rehearsals and events.
One player inspires another—and that’s how a band grows.

New season starting this weekend! Sign up now!

Of course, CYBB is about making music—but it’s also about the friendships formed along the way.
Bringing together young brass and percussion players from across Cumbria gives members the chance to meet people who share their interests, support one another and become part of a welcoming musical community. Rehearsals, performances and events aren’t only opportunities to develop as a player; they’re chances to make memories and build friendships that can last far beyond the final note.
